I'm not sure if this thread has been done before, I didn't see one... but here you go. List the three most beautiful-sounding words or 2-3 word phrases, and the three most harsh-sounding words or 2-3 word phrases in your opionion. Now... this is strictly on how they sound, not what feeling is attatched to the word.

    Beautiful:
    Grievous tyranny
    Wisteria
    Gasoline

    Harsh:
    Crass
    Shining
    Brittle

some of the harsh sounding words on this list actually sound beautiful to me. i think i agree with kidder though; the meanings of the words play a huge part in how they sound to me.

I agree Ganja. For example, I think indigestion is a beautiful word. To me it seems that even though it represents an unsoothing feeling, the word sounds warm and comforting.

    Beautiful:

    - resonate
    - elemental
    - insidious

    harsh:

    - aesthetic (weird, that..)
    - agenda
    - ennui (need a better word for that state of mind)
    - panties

I love the sound/feel of certain harsh words in certain circumstances and phrases... Hmm, trying to think of some words I simply don't like, but none are coming to mind. I just love words... wanna just wrap myself up in them all cozy... which, I guess, is what I'm doing right now, lol...

Weird aside: anyone remember the "cellar door" bit in "Donnie Darko"? I loved that...

Donnie Darko is actually what inspired this thread. I do not think that "cellar door" is the most beautiful phrase in the English language, so I thought I'd see what others would come up with.

I still think "grievous tyranny" is amazing both in it's structural sense, and in it's implied meaning.

Yum: Ischial, elysium, tripsis, tmesis (love that one), sciolism, circumvent, mummer, tumescent, umbilici, supine.

Yuck: Scut, moribund, bile, cuneform, ululate, mons, and of course: cunt. Lots of glands, basically.
