which bands do you think are either really over or under rated? and to make it more interesting, why? over rated: metallica- i dont think any band that constantly sounds the same deserves the credit that they get. the strokes- don't get me wrong, they're good, but not nearly as much as people think they are. good charolette/simple plan/etc.- i don't think that really needs any explaining.. beck- he definately makes good music...but i think that his cds also have a lot of crap, so i guess i have mixed feelings bout him. under rated: rooney- i think that their music is a lot more original and creative than other bands, but they don't really get recognized for it. the ravonettes- theyre not so much under rated as much as i just wish they'd get more recognized as a good garage band. not so many people have heard them, and they really deserve a listen. no doubt- return of saturn, basically. that cd is nothing but a-quality songs, and i think that they get written off too much because rock steady was all dance music. they're just good at everything they do, whatever they choose to be doing always comes out really amazing. im sure ill think of some more when i get home to look at my cds...
Over-rated: Hating Bush-NOFX and other political bands really need to take a chill pill. the Ramones- I really like them, but the whole teenie punk thing with girls gets me down. Nirvana- Don't get me wrong, I like their stuff too, but I can't stand all these people crying over the death of someone they didn't even know. It's a lot of stuff people mistake for the best music, teenage angst, etc... Under-Rated: Barenaked Ladies- They've been around for a while now, and deserve some applause for their wonderful music. Velvet Underground- You can't find a lot of people who've even heard of them.
Over rated: Evanessence or however you spell it. Under rated: Death, i only heard this band a few months ago and they are wicked but no one seems to know it.
OVER bANDS like creed and nickelback, just don't do it for me OH AND theres this australian group called mercury 4, well they just make me mad AND folks like usher and mr oglacious jr. dude UNDER Sinead Occonor, yeah im serious jACK jOHNSON, jASON mARZ, tRAIN, arni Difranco, Paris Hilton(kidding)
Kaleidoscope is the most underrated band. They are from california in 1966. started by david lindley who is all around string player for jackson browne. They are so good , psychedelic folk rock with eastern influences. They are truely one of the treasures of the 60's.
I like the British band Kaleidoscope, i know there's an american band with the same name, but i haven't heard them yet. i'll check them out.
I agree that the stones and metallica are overrated. i also think aerosmith, zeppelin and alot of other mainstream bands are overrated. and yes and elp and rush and ...I can go on and on. most mainstream msuic is overrated, thanks to the media. underrated is hard, that all depends on whos thinking it, what people are used to and what people like. I can say Can is underrated but that would only in the mainstream crowd. but with the people who know how important their music was, which is a good amount of people id say they werent. same goes for king crimson. i even think later floyd 73-79 is overrated too.
Overrated: Metallica - I just dont think a band who lies to fans and demands a lot of cash is really about the music. Nickleback - They sound the same! I heard two songs cued up together and they were almost the exact same. He did that whiney moan at the same time. The Clash - Good band, not that phenomenal. Nirvana - Sales increased after he blew his brains out... If he hadn't would he be as legendary? I think not. Do I even need to mention all the -cough- "Punk" bands? Underrated: Dead Kenedys/Exploited/Anti-Flag : Three punk bands who are extremely talented with amazing solos Black Label Society - Not a lot of people know Zakks awesomeness AC/DC - Angus Young... Come on Mudvayne - Excellent musicians and vocal talent is amazing. Not just an "angry" band
Overrated: Contemporary Pop Music- Britney Sucks, NSucks, Blowjobstreet boys, etc.... 80's new wave, there are a few ok bands, but it's just to overproduced for me Metallica- come on... Disco - again, come on... Underrated: Ben Kweller- listen to him, he's a very talented musician Spoon- "That's The Way We Get By" Supergrass- "Caught By The Fuzz" is a far out tune.
Love both US and UK Kaleidoscopes also worth a listen is the Mexican Kaleidoscope who played some mean fuzzed up garage psych,
Overrated: All contemporary Pop music of today, most new Metal bands, most new Hard Rock bands, most new punk bands. Underrated: Animal Bag, Temple of the Dog, Rusted Root, Meat Puppets, Eyes Adrift, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Prem Joshua, Rick Braun, The Rippingtons, George Harrison, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Craig Chaquico, Moody Blues, J Mascis, XTC, Dukes of Stratosphere, Mindfunk...
Overrated: Nirvana Metallica Rolling Stones Simon & Garfunkel Todays Pop Bands Queen Abba Underrated: Grateful Dead (here in germany nobody knows them except of a few hippies) Courtney Love (yes I know that she was a bad musician until her solo LP) Mystic Siva (they all were 15) Jethro Tull Early Nightwish Shaun Guerin Velvet Underground Cpt. Beefheart Willie Nelson The Holding Company Manfred Man Blood Sweet & Tears ...
you can't really call the VU underrated or Capt Beefheart for that matter. THey just aren't known but everyone who does know them knows they are incredible. Overrated Jimi Hendrix-Great Player but the hype makes him seem god like The Beatles- (hides from the flaming about to ensue) Nirvana-Kurt knew all of 3 chords on a guitar Underrated Bill Haley-he made rock n roll before elvis
these are all great points but i'd have to add OVERRATED Incubus ~ everything from the last album that got em on mtv kinda sucked. a couple good tunes, but not as good as everyone says. Though everything from the previous records is some of the best music to come out of the last 15 years. oh, and the new album rocks! dont get me wrong, Incubus is one of my fav bands. UNDERRATED Babatunde Olatunji ~ The man brought afro-cuban rhythms to rock n roll. teamed up with Mickey Hart and the rest of the Dead, Baba gave us that sense of entrainment in which all of your bodily life rhythms synch up with the music. That's what makes you completely lose any sense of time during a song.
All these people who are saying that all this new pop-"punk" stuff is over-rated, well in 30 years I hardly expect it will be as big as any of the 60s bands we still remember are now, so don't worry about it.
Overrated: the majority of classic rock that you guys listen to and the beatles Underrated: John Lennon and the beatles
