The first translation you were given is not entirely correct..... "Boa noite. Da última vez que nos encontrámos estavas preocupada, mas agora pareces profundamente triste." Translates to "Good night. Of the last time we met you were worried, but now you appear/look profoundly sad." Here is a better one to fix the slight errors... For a girl... "Boa tarde. A última vez que nos encontrámos estavas preocupada, mas agora pareces profundamente triste." For a girl For a boy... "Boa tarde. A última vez que nos encontrámos estavas preocupado, mas agora pareces profundamente triste." It's just the "noite" and "Da" that were off base. Although the argument for noite and tarde both meaning "evening" is a fair one, I've found that tarde is used most often. In my translation there should be a backwords facing accent over the "A" that follows the word "tarde" as it is a conjunction of two A's
Ok, you're right, "A" is more correct than "Da"... but it in that sentece it means exactly the same!!! "Da" is often used in oral speech, you know. Now about the "evening"... "tarde" is the period of time that starts after midday and ends when the night begins... it isn't a matter of knowing which word is used more often, because they have different meanings! "Evening" doesn't go for "tarde", it goes for "tardinha", "entardecer","anoitecer", this is, the period of time when the sun goes down... Anyway, people don't say "Bom anoitecer" or "Bom entardecer", they just say "Boa Noite".
I must say that the portuguese language is one of the most rich in the world and we have for every notion, concept, lots of different words. I salute all u non portuguese that show interess in my birth language. its beautifull and rich but its also hard to learn. Keep it up!
