I heard today that never wearing a bra will cause your breasts to sag early. I'm hoping it's a myth since I hardley ever wear one and haven't for years. Any truth to this?

I've heard that too and it kinda makes sense. When you see wimin in africa their breasts are just above their ankles lol :p, but I don't know if it's true or not.

I always heard that wearing a bra a lot of the time will make your boobs sag because they don't havea chance to support themselfs.... and that made a lot of sense to me aswell as your comments.... maybe you just need a happy medium.

I heard that saginess is a lot more linked to genetics than it is to bra-usage. If your mom and grandmother(s) have saggy breasts when they're older, you probably will as well, sort of a deal

    rumours are fun

Oh, god no, I could never sleep in one. I barely like wearing one when I'm out. And I only do that because I'm still nursing.

I've heard that it's just a myth, though I could maybe see how the skin would stretch over a long time (perhaps if you are big breasted), but that'll happen anyway.

Neither bras nor exercise will prevent sag. Sag is genetic (it is more pronounced in African womyn, which is why you see those National Geographic pictures, nothing to do with the fact that they have no bras)

Larger breasts also tend to sag more (more tissue) and breastfeeding does NOT make you sag more. (but pregnancy does cause breakdown of the connective tissue) There are no large muscles in breasts (small ones to help with milk letdown and nipple shape, no large ones you can exercise) so exercise can strenghten the under muscles, but had no effect on the breast by itself.

I'm so scared now lol the women in my family are all large-breasted (I'm not exactly tiny) and while I'm still young and firm, I'm afraid for what lies ahead! My mom had a reduction a few years ago...

At this point, I'm not worried about sagging. Sure, my breasts aren't nearly as firm as they were before having little ones, but oh well. I'm on the smaller side, and my breasts aren't exactly huge (I wear a 34C) and although I sometimes find myself fantasizing about more plump and firm breasts I figure I'd rather be more natural than not. ;)

As far as the sleeping with a bra on, no way could I do that! How comfy would that really be?

    Peace.

I'll sleep with a bra on during my period because if I don't, my breasts feel like they're so heavy they're going to pull right off my body! but it's a sports bra so it's not uncomfortable. As for bra vs. no bra, I wear a bra most of the time, I have large breasts and if I don't, it can actually be extremely uncomfortable. Part of the solution is to buy bras that fit properly and suit your needs.

I too have heard that wearing a bra all of the time (over 12 hours a day) can promote breast cancer. I'm not small particularly, but, unless I'm out, and have a tighter shirt on, I go bra-less...for me it just feels better, and I don't worry as much about the big C...and, as for sag, I figure I"m gonna sag anyway (runs in my family)...so I don't care so much...

That's silly, how would a bra promote breast cancer? That's like saying wearing pants will promote leg cancer.

It seems that everyone thinks that sagging breasts are something to avoid. Is this part of our cultural bias towards youth or is there a physical/medical reason that sagging is bad? Aren't breast "supposed" to sag as a woman gets older and wiser?

Well it would be nice if our breasts never sagged but they do in older age. My question was more pertaining to whether or not it's possible for your breasts to sag early from not wearing a bra....like in your mid 20's. I'm definatley not going to be happy when they begin to sag when I'm older but I wouldn't ever think about getting breast implants or a lift to change things.

Well Elle (hey, that rhymes!).... :) If you have been going for years without one and they aren't sagging, then I would say you don't have anything to worry about! :)

Mine have always been so big, they've always sagged because they're so heavy.

And I cannot sleep in a bra. I like my boobs to me in my armpits where they belong, when I sleep.... :)
