Ohhhhhh! I was a very naughty mama indeed! DH bought these peanut-butter cup ice cream treats, and offered me one. And in a moment of weakness I gobbled it up! And my tummy has been yelling at me since I did... Monday night!

While I'm not quite ready to go vegan, I MUST give up the little dairy that was left in my diet. 3+ days of stomach cramps just isn't worth it. Also, I think I need to cut back even more on sugars. Adult onset diabetes runs in my family, and I'm not exactly a featherweight.

So... I can use soy or almond milk in almost every recipe I've found, and am not really missing cheese. What ingredients do I need to look out for, for hidden dairy? I know lactose, but that's about it.

And for sugars. If something has organic or turbinado sugar in it, do you think it would have the same effect as white refined sugar on a somewhat picky digestive system? I don't eat a lot of sweetie foods, but I do have occasional cravings for dark chocolate, and minty sweets. I'm wondering about things like Chimp Mints or 1/6 of a Green & Blacks bar.
    love,
    mom

Sorry to hear about your tummy!
I wish I had some advice for you, but honestly, besides taste, I've yet to find a real difference between processed, ultra-refined, etc and natural sugars.

organic sugar is usually just a processed. the difference would be going to, say, fructose over sucrose from cane/beets.
the hard core vegans will be able to really help with hidden dairy, but look out for casien and lactic acids, as well. some lactic acids are from fermentation (kombucha tea, for example) but most are dairy-derived.
