it varies greatly man, some dirt cheap, some pricey as hell. my favorite are forrestry service campgrounds, often secluded and you just drop like 2 bucks in a little box, they base it highly on the honor system, Ive seen a lot of people skink out on paying cause "they'd never know", just pay the damn fee. I seem to remember there was a pass of permit you could get so you can stay at as many forrestry service campgrounds as you can before the permit expires, if memory serves correct the permit is pretty cheap and if you take that route you could possibly get a whole lotta free camping outa it. Just check out your local ranger station, see what they have to say.
camp in natl forests! most of them are free & will let you camp anywhere. but check the laws first...everywhere is different
yea, don't camp if it ain't free, you've got a better chance of getting fucked over in a camp ground anyway. I'd carry two bottles of mace with you though, one for each just incase you meet a crazy asshole who's feeling horney. I'm a peace keeper all the way and'll walk away or try to talk my way through situations first always, but not everyone sees it that way.
who buys a campground? i cant even buy a months supply of food. thanks for the mace hint, we're considering getting an old gun that doesn't work for show..
The mace is a good idea. If you're gonna take a gun, you might as well take one that works...and know how to use it. Something tells me it's highly illegal to travel around with a handgun though. But mace...yeah, that's the shit. A good knife that you can always keep on your person would be an excellent idea.
A word of advice about hikin around with a gun, it'll cost you more trouble then it's worth, even if it doesn't work, for one thing even old guns can get you labeled for carrying a concealed weapon, ive encountered many a rural cop who wants to bust the dirty hippy for the fun of it, they usual expect you loaded with drugs, but a concealed weapon looks terrible. Another shitty thing that i hear about and have actualy seen, crazy horny redneck tanked up on diluted wood alcohol out to find some woman in a campground may be scared a little by a gun, but often is the case that the locals'll catch wind of it and either in the need to get somthing to skin off for more meth or just to have a handgun, especialy a stolen handgun is a very valuable item I could speculate further but I think you have the idea.

Oh yeah, and the things are heavy.
Ditto on the non-functioning handgun. Mace would be my first choice for simplicity and legalities. I guess it just depends on what you're comfortable with and how much money and hassle you wanna dump into self defence (not saying that its not a wise investment) If you're 21 and have a fairly clean record (no felonies and domestic violence charges) you could apply for a concealed cary license/permit through your local sheriffs office. Another idea to consider would be taking a self-defence course or atleast brushing up on some basic techniques. There's way too many unknowns out there for me to be left with my proverbial pants down, but to each his/her own. Good Luck -Bob *edit to say if you do the CCL route make sure you know the laws about carry'n thru certain states, it alotta red tape for anything gun related
tritto on the handgun. if you do get busted with any kind of mj or whatever, you're looking at a felony. Uck. And, try freecampgrounds.com.
can hook you up with a camping spot in south louisiana near lafayette and also in south mississippi near hattiesburg. definitely ditch the gun idea, mace may help, but not if the attacker is all tweeked out. if you plan it out well and make enough contacts from state to state, you may be able to find enough family that you don't need to pay to camp anywhere. we all have our "secret" spots.
I definitely agree with everyone who says to ditch the broken gun. You do not want to get busted for that. Besides, my little brother has a pellet gun that looks just like areal handgun. It can shoot these little darts as well as pellets. However, I think you would be better off spending what little money you have on good wilderness survival gear.
takeing a firarm that dont work jsut for show is dangerous you would be better off if it worked. but just saying taking a firearm for show tells me your probably not really ready for a trip such as your just yet. and unloaded or non working firearm is just a club plain and simple and if a bad person sees a firearm and they want your shit all that will happen is they will get a firearm(and id bet theirs will work) and you will end up with a gunshot wound at best. or raped and dead at worst.... if your just looking to get out from under parents control or out of mainstream living try a commune, for awhile probably give you some skills and time to age a little.
If you're hiking (with no car), a primitive site will cost you $3-7/night. If you're driving, check out http://freecampgrounds.com. And don't take a gun.
Yes, I too think that Mace would be better than a gun. For one, they can be gotten for cheaper, are more effective in terms of that compared to a non-functioning gun, and the sheer fact that you each have mace might scare the guy away. But you must decide which mace to buy. There are 2 basic types: or Notice the chain on the second one (this is the style I have). The first one is deffinately for being used more like a club with spikes... Being two of you, perhaps you could each cary one and become proficiant with them both. But be careful if you choose the one with the chain, that you do not swing it and it comes back and injures you.
