Elaborate Tunnel Found on US Border
Underground Passageway Has Electricity, Hose for Ventilation

(June 12) -- Authorities have found a massive underground drug smuggling tunnel snaking through the U.S.-Mexican border, and law officers are marveling over its sophistication.
"This is one of the most elaborate tunnels I've seen," Border Patrol agent Michael Scioli said.
Border Patrol agents found the uncompleted tunnel last week, the patrol said in a statement.



Border patrol officials announced Thursday the discovery of what one officer called "one of the most elaborate tunnels" ever seen on the U.S.-Mexico border. The unfinished tunnel ran 83 feet from Mexico into Nogales, Ariz., and included electrical wiring. Click through for other drug tunnel discoveries.

Measuring 48 feet in the United States and 35 feet in Mexico, the tunnel contains side walls framed with 2-by-4 wooden studs and ceiling construction.

"It's elegant in the sense it has electrical work wired into the Mexico side. It even has a hose for ventilation and lightning," Scioli said.
The development points to successes law officers are having in uncovering the tunnels, with an additional 16 tunnels found since October 1. But it also underscores the skills and savvy of the drug smuggling industry.
A resident tipped off the patrol about construction activity through the wall of a building in Nogales, Arizona. Agents arrested two people cutting a hole.

 

Every single time they find a new tunnel .. "Oh oh oh its the biggest tunnel ever" geez..

Anybody actually paying attention to the border war? I was in LA last weekend and everyone I talked to said avoid Mexico. Apparently there's a 9:00 curfew because of the drug war. The cartels are literally beheading cops and innocents. Real scary shit.

this is a drug tunnel illegally made, mining tunnels aren't.

 

I am saying that CNN is VERY strongly overstating the facts.

Anyone with a very simple knowledge of engineering, and a good network of blue collar friends could say "hey, guys, wanna make 20 times what you're making" and do better than this

CNN is overstating the complexity, and CNN is overstating the significance of this tunnel

there are better tunnels, there are bigger tunnels, and the border patrol and DEA aren't going to find them.

it doesn't matter that mining tunnels are constructed legally, and drug tunnels aren't, some bribes in the right places, and the difference is purely academic.
