Umm, I could use a little inspiration. This will be my first Valentine's Day as a veggie. And our anniversary is 2 weeks after that, so I could use a couple good ideas Though he's mentioned maybe taking me to The Good Earth for our anniversary,... but I could always use good ideas. I want to cook something absolutely fabulous for DH. And I want it to be vegan. I'm pretty comfortable in the kitchen, so I ought to be able to handle anything short of a meringue. BUT... DH is a meatasaurus. He really likes his meat. And I don't want him to think I'm doing this out of spite or to sway him to my choices, I just want something special that we can share together. I'm popping through all of the vegan recipe sites I've found, but I'm a little leery of trying a recipe out for the 1st time, on Valentine's day. Oh... and the kids will be with us, so if anyone knows something kid-friendly that would be just too awesome. Thanks all love, mom
practice on the kids at lunchtimes. and think of vegan versions of stuff you'd cook before: white bean sauce on ww pasta, red wine, primavera veggies. for the kids: hippie fingers (Registered trademark) marinated tofu or tempeh, hot oil dippy sauces slice thin, fry hard, dip and eat.
Cheese fondue (if you eat cheese). Not fabulous cooking, but the eating process is very romantic. (I'd send the kids elsewhere for the evening) Tradiditonaly, if you drop your bread into the cheese, you buy a bottle of wine. Other forfeits are possible.
Can't... the kids have to be here. All my friends are married & it would be rude to ask them watch the kids. I'd ask my parents since they're perfect doting grandparents & all that, but for the first time in 40 years my dad is planning on wooing Mom and I am NOT spoiling that!!! I just found a raviolil recipe in the munchies section that I'll have to try with the kids. We all LOVE ravioli! And if that doesn't end up working out I might go with some veggie stir-fry and bao-tse for us, and maybe chik-fingers or drumminmamas fingers (ooh, that sounds nasty!) for the kids. What would the be good with? The same kinds of things you'd dip a chik nugget in like BBQ or ranch dressing??? Ohh, this is so frustrating! But it would be nice if just once a week I could cook ONE meal for the 4 of us instead of playing short-order chef and cooking 2-3 meals at once, so I'm trying to find things we can compromise on. love, mom
these should be fairly kid-friendly. my sisters love them.... vegetarian alphabet soup with lots of veggies spaghetti with marinara sauce (add vegetables like broccoli and zuchini and mushrooms and red onions if they like that) this can be a much easier thing than the ravioli veggie pizza (vegan right?) tomatoes, artichokes, spinach, country olives, red onions, bell peppers, tomato sauce. put garlic and other italian spices/herbs on the crust. add feta and asiago if you're just going vegetarian (but check for rennet, it's an animal death by-product) go mexican. use beans only instead of meat on nachos and tacos and burritos. add lettuce, tomatoes, bell peppers, onions... make a nacho salad and add ranch dressing too (everybody loves this when i make it) and then the things you already mentioned too... veggie stir fry, ravioli, etc... all good ideas and these are pretty easy too.
wait til you hear what Arlo called artichoke Alien brains. we loved gross names and it got all his friends to try the food. then there was memory flu and memory flu elixir... but that's for another day
Alien brains!!! That's what my lil guy calls garbanzo beans! We were at Target this afternoon and my lil one had to go through the dollar spot. I swear, she's addicted. Anyway, we found some little pails to use as votive holders & candles to go in them, and a heart-shaped pancake mold. She wants to make pancakes with fresh strawberries. And I've got a "recipe" for OJ with carbonated water & fresh berries that would go with that really well. (it ends up looking like a tequila sunrise) So it looks like it's gonna be breakfast for dinner Now I've gotta work on dessert... something rich, dark chocolatey & absolutely to die for. I think the kids & I are gonna see if we can recreate mousse with almond milk this week! love, mom
try making vegi brownies, with chocolate soy milk... you can make your own frosting and add red color to it. then cut them into little hearts, or use red spinkles or any other decoration I made heart shaped sugar cookies... vegan style... with red sugar... they looked super prety. i just thought of something yummy... a heart shaped brownie, a scoop of vanilla vegi ice cream, topped with strawberries or red sprinkles for the kids... ok now I'm hungry!!!
