rshah, I think the author is on a holier than thou kick and deserves to have his/her words come back to haunt. These kinds of mindsets are all or nothing. By attacking others in the veg*an community, the vitorol of the arguments might send the beginning veggies back to the steak house with a feeling of "I cannot go all the way so why bother?" which eventually undermines the writer's supposed goal: animals no longer used by humans. This is fundamentalism: the same fundamentalism that brought us the Crusades, the Inquisition, the Salem Witch trial, the Shoah/Devouring/ Holocaust, the current wave of extremeism in the Muslim world (how difficult it must be to simply wish for Allah's peace amongst the screaming of the enflamed) and many other limitations on the human spirit. It fades, becomes a laughingstock and the world eventually finds a balance. I admire the writer's passion. I feel it is misspent. Why run down people who are on the same path you are, if at a different degree? if I were again 13 and starting on my path, and encountered this sort of tirade, I think it would have been the pressure that broke me. I became veggie in Texas, "Beef Country, land of veggie libel (much later). What are you a comie ya salad eater?" We must HELP people who wish to open their lived to fleshless meals. And pushing a perfect definition is not helping anything. Except the meat, egg and dairy industries.
lol, agreed! I dont like the whole idea of putting people down for their lifestyles like that, you know? Radicals of any kind, irritate me. Sometimes they can be capable of making good points [the way this guy did] but, along with that, they put everyone else down, which is totally childish in my opinion. Of course, I believe that eating meat or hunting, and anything that goes along with it, is cruel, but Im not going to run around calling the people who do those things "Stupid" or anything to the effect. Stating an opinion is one thing, but putting other peoples opinion down is another, and thats the vibe I get from this dude's essay. To me, the whole essay was immature over anything. Id also, like to go along with what you said, and expand by saying that most all vegans are vegetarian first. I'm sure there are some vegans who went straight to the vegan diet, but it's not as common. It makes me wonder if at one point this guy was simply a vegetarian too...
You always word things so well. And, I agree. For a lot of people, going vegan must be a gradual process, as it involves lots of research. And, I agree with you, I think over anything, for beginning veggies this sort of essay just puts a load of pressure on a person. Jumping into anything can be dangerous, or lead to failure/throwing in the towel. I also love how you said you admire his passion but feel it is misspent. I agree with that also. As always, your comments are eloquent and well-thought out.
well, sniff, thank you A+O. not everyone will be vegan. I still have dairy, and in some circumstances, don't sweat the ingredients of, say, bread. does this make a lacto=ovo less of a human than a vegan? I so doubt it. Does this make a vegan an innately better person? not if they are this cold and cruel to other veggies! We are the same "team" : lessening the consumption of animals and raising the awareness that all eating takes life or potential life.
