Actually more of a legal question, than a legal one. Though I do think politics comes into play here too. What is the legal status of viewing pornography in public libraries now? I know, about 10 years ago (maybe more), there was a lot of talk about it in the news. It is your constitutional right, to view just about whatever you want on the internet. And public libraries had internet filters. But they had to remove them, if you requested. Now, no one even talks about the subject anymore. Is it still legal? And is still your right? BTW, I am not suggesting anyone actual view porn at their local library. This is purely a hypothetical question. :book:
I don't know for sure. Most library computers I've used within the past couple years have filters, for instance, I've even tried to get on this site before at a library and it's been blocked due to various explicit content, in certain forums. I'd guess that it's "legal" to view porn, if it's not filtered, but I suspect that if a librarian or employee comes by and sees you are looking at porn, they likely will and have every right to tell you to get off the site, I'm sure they have the ability to enforce restrictive measures for that kind of thing. Personally, I cannot even really imagine what would be appealing about looking at porn in a library, so even as a hypothetical it's a bit weird to think about.
Well, from what I've read it is still undecided law. According to lawyers at UCLA, libraries could put filters in place and keep them there until someone complained. It sounds pretty creepy to me.
I've NEVER viewed porn in a public library even ONCE. And my question was purely a hypothetical legal one.
Watching porn in a public library is one thing (not advocating it btw ), publicy masturbating at it another. It's not like a penis automatically and inevitably comes out of a pair of pants when watching porn.
What if that person is wearing cortchless sweatpants? btw is there a law on wearing assless chaps to a public library? I'm asking for a friend.
The following quote, from Detroit Public Library (where I live), may be helpful: http://www.detroitpubliclibrary.org/sites/default/files/files/library/internet_usage_policy_0.pdf They seem to be referring to sites that are sexually explicit for non-porn reasons, though, I think. Also, I heard story about 10 years ago, also in metro-Detroit, of a library that just took all its computer terminals out, because men who viewing too much porn on them (!). But much like this policy in Detroit, things may be much different now. The law, specifically, might have changed. (This reference, too, might be an old one. Things don't change very fast in Detroit, where most of the citizenry have moved to the suburbs anyways .) I really have no personal interest in this matter myself. I have no need to view porn in public libraries. My question is purely hypothetical, as I said.
That happened to me at a Coffee Bean. I was trying to get on this site. It said "nope" and it wouldn't let me on.
I can't get to HF in most of the Middle East, Africa and the majority of US corporations I have visited, even as a guest account. It's clearly a conspiracy, but what's the connection? Are they hustling Skip for protection money?
Seems to me it is a case of Public access v Public protection - Viewing of and by minors has a degree of legal adherence to it - whereas Private viewing has certain laws - which I believe were challenged by Larry Flynt in the US, - I think that being Public buildings. they have certain responsibilities - for all 'users' (duty of care - maybe different states have different rules on the matter? Perhaps asking the librarian at your local facility may assist in enlightenment (?)
I made a mistake in my local library some 15-20 years ago...I was looking for a crankshaft manufacturer's website. Their name is very close to the subject of odd sexual practice, in fact one I had never considered or even thought of. On their browser, as I typed what I was looking for, a list of similar topics came up. I saw the weird subject in question and curiosity got the best of me, I thought WTF?...and clicked on it. Upon doing this, a bell started going off in the library, people were looking at me, a few smiling...I quickly backed off the site, back on to the list. A Patron came to me, of course I was like "what was that about?...She said "you went somewhere you're not supposed to go, let me reset it for you". So I never did that again. Lol Yep that was embarrassing. Had she saw what I did I'm sure she would have asked me to leave. A picture of two pretty ladies having smeared feces on their faces. Titled "Girls peeing and eating shit". Now that was gross. But yeah I had to see that for myself, I thought it sounded crazy.
