Ok i was watching the news and this thing came on about this guy that got blamed for killing his family but now blames it on a group of violent nazi hippies. That confuses me hippies should be loving and peaceful not going around killing people . I think they mislabled this group of people . There people that are in a hate group there not hippies . This one guy is the head of it, he's in jail i cant remeber his name but hes a a hardcore nazi dude with a swatica ( or how ever the fuck u spell it ) on his head . Does anyone else kno what iam talking about and if u do how do u feel about such a thing ? Thank you for listening to me please respond with ur oppinions !! : ) Peace katy
I believe, Katy, that you are referring to Charles Manson, a deranged individual who, in the late '60s, led a group of kids on a murdering spree that included the murder of a famous actress (I recall her name was Sharon Tate or something like that). Charles Manson believed that the killing spree would ignite an apocalyptic interracial war in the country. Charles Manson represented the degeneration of the hippie movement, when it amounted to no more than sexual orgies and drug abuse in communes of California. Back then the kids who strayed from their families seeking out a new life were easily misled by charismatic figures who made themselves out to be spiritual gurus. The neo-Nazis have nothing but hatred for hippies, seeing them as the root of many of the social ills facing the modern world. I tend to see the counterculture as a culmination of the West's trend toward individual freedom and liberty, a point of history that was inevitable given the character of the West and its technological advancement. This movement carried both its positive and negative aspects, and I would hope we could perhaps grab the very best of it: love and respect for our fellow human beings, the lack of cynicism, and admiration for youth, simplicity and nature. The neo-Nazis are collectivists with fixations on race, whereas hippies tend to be more apolitical. Hippies are introspective soul-searchers, many of whom reject politics altogether, whereas Nazis are politically extroverted. Both groups have points of intersection, and there are aspects of the hippie way of life that are collectivistic, as in the communes and in the free medical clinic and the free distribution of food in Haight-Ashbury. Hippies lack racial consciousness, whereas neo-Nazis tend to see virtually all social ills rooted in race.
Are you telling me you didn't know who Charles Manson is? Wooowww.... Actually, you wouldn't be the first. A kid I know didn't know who he was, either. I was downright shocked, I thought everyone knew that.
It seems to me that "nazi hippies" is an oxymoron. Members of a hate group might have long hair and do drugs, thus people mistakenly tend to label them as hippies.
not sure if Katy was referring to Charlie Manson cuz her post says that the guy was blamed for killing his family, then blamed it on a group. Charlie was blamed for sending is 'family' to kill. Also, Charlie was not a hippie; the media called him a hippie because of his long hair; and Charlie stated that he hated hippies. Not saying that the person accused of killing his family didn't hook up with the reminants of Charlie Manson's family but the neo-Nazi culture is very much alive in Katy's part of the country. And as far as hippies being apolitical, maybe you should ask PieMan how 'apolitical' he, Abbie Hoffman, and the rest of the Yippies are/were. In this day & age, many hippie folks are involoved in different aspects of politics. They are trying to fight for people's rights, for environmentalism, for marijuana legalization., and more. There are a lot of hippies involved in the political scene.
I knew who he was its just i didnt remeber his name LOL ... thanks u guys for the good feedback I dont like how they called him & the group that is with him hippies when they are simply not ... its crazy ... if people are going to lable they should lable correctly. hippiestead what do u mean by " neo nazi culure is very much alive in katys part of the country"? ok .. please respond thanks to all that responded so far Peace katy
never heard of charles manson refered to as a hippie ..deranged maybe but not a hippy ...i remember the sharon tate and labianca murders ..if memory is still working ,the reverse swastika that manson has on his forehead was done in prison ,after the murders ...as far as neo-nazi groups i don,t think anybody would mistake them for hippies ..with their shaved head and steel toed boots ...........but then again the media was never one to be known for brains ............never met a reporter yet that was a polymath but they all write like they are experts on anything ..for example ..a reporter goes to a seminar on nuclear energy ..he stays for half an hour and grabs some pamplets and writes a story .people think that the whole seminar was on what the reporter wrote ...do i make my point??? i know because hundreds of newspaper articles have been written about me .....want to know how many were 100% accurate?? of all the ones i saw and read............3
Charles Manson not only had long hair, but he was a symbol of the times of the '60s, when kids who strayed from their families and hometowns sought spiritual leaders to guide them. He also participated in the communal life, and claimed that Beatles songs had embedded messages directed specifically at him (right when the Beatles embraced the counterculture). Like many individuals of the counterculture, he participated in free love. You can argue whether or not he was a hippie, but you cannot argue that he was not a product of his times, who found a niche in posing himself as a leader among youthful vagabonds and outcasts. He was one of many self-styled gurus during the late '60s. Today it would be much harder, though not impossible, to make it as a self-appointed prophet or messiah. If you disagree with anything I wrote, feel free to voice it. The point you are missing is that hippies smoking weed and consuming LSD could never be taken seriously by the mainstream, and thus could never have the political impact they'd like, assuming they wished to make an impact. Even the Yippies you deem politically active could not be taken seriously by the mainstream, nor even by the Democrat left. They were marginal figures who strayed from the hippie movement by attempting to blend hippie values with left-wing politics. Many of the original hippies were in fact sexist and made women do the cooking and cleaning in the communes. They had a tendency to withdraw from mainstream life and to philosophize and focus inwardly. There were egalitarian tendencies intrinsic to the movement, because of the hippie focus on the human spirit over physical differences, as well as in their protest over traditional social hierarchies. So it seems the hippie way of life was somewhat contradictory, with tendencies toward collectivism yet marked by the withdrawal of individuals from socially accepted ways of living and the conformity it entailed. Even today, the most "successful" left-wing politicians tend to distance themselves from the radical left in an attempt to get votes, and Democrats right along with Republicans support the current drug war in an attempt to appear tough on crime. The hippies were a visible element within the countercultural currents of the '60s, but they were by no means the most politically influential. The Civil Rights nor the women's rights movements needed the hippies to get to where they are today.
Charlie was a product of the prison system; he had spent over half of his life locked-up by the time he started his Family. And free love is not the same as free sex As far as hippies & politics; the yippies effected some change way back in the day and hippie values are currently effecting a lot of current legislation. In this day & age, there are hippie politicians, maybe they don't wear tie-dyes or have long hair, but their hearts are hippie. oh and Katie, the reference to the Neo-Nazis in your part of the country....there is a Neo Nazi compound in West Virginia.
I would call Charles Manson a bad hippie. He was a hippie ,not because he had shoulder-length hair & beard but because he espoused the hippie culture of living in communes in the outdoors with free-love etc.He perverted the hippie-creed for his own criminal purposes. The Beach Boys actually recorded one of his songs in 1968 & it's on their album: '20/20'. Manson was personally friends with Dennis Wilson. When the atrocities took place everyone denied that they had anything to do with him.Doris Day's son Terry Melcher was friendly & his refusal to sign-up Manson led the countdown to the slayings.
ive met hippies who hate before who are not named manson. yes they are violent, some carry firearms, some have dreadlocks . . .. . the progression is usually, stoner kid into hippie dealer, hippie deealer into the 'headiest' tour head ever, 'headiest' head into prison inmate, prison inmate into large hateful murderers non voluntary boyfriend, non vouluntary boyfriend into realeased from prison. newly free into junkie or hateful hippie. they're all over the place, and alot of times they gang up together. but it happens.
On the Manson thing, Charlie was studying psychology before he was sprung from prison before the murders. He saw his opportunity to take advantage of the trends of the times. But on these other 'violent hippies'; guess that depends on your definition of 'hippie'. For us, it's a basic belief system based on peace and spiritual growth; not a fashion statement characterized by drug use.
anyone who is that violent isnt a hippie. you can look like one, act like one, ect but cant really be one because that goes against the main belief: peace and love. about manson though-he just took advantage of what was going on at the time and people who just thought they were getting in on the scene. and i just saw a article the other day on a new neonazi thing. theres these two 13 year old girls who are in a nazi band. in the picture they had 'cute' little t-shirts with a picture of hitler on them, it was freaky.
In a book I'm reading by Paul Krassner, he comments on how the sheriff's department of Los Angeles instructed officers not to arrest Manson or any of his followers because they were under the impression that Manson wanted to attack members of The Black Panthers....crazy shit eh?
Acorn, we had a picture of them in our student paper the other week, scariest little brats imaginable. All "We want to keep our Aryan blood pure, we'll donate money to help KAtrina victims, so long as it doesn't go to blacks, Hitler was a great bloke". I'm actually quite terrified of them.....
I think y'all are talking about Prussian Blue? These girls? They shouldn't be hated, just pitied. They believe what they do because someone else has told them that it's right. Blame the parents, or blame their parent's parents, or whatever.
It does defeat the whole purpose....but there are violent people in any "group" such as the "hippy people" I've met Violent Hippys before.....people who love the music, the culture, and the beliefs....but they just snap when they get mad......(the drugs and alchohol usually doesnt help) but usually Violent Hippys only protect good people it seems like.....but then again there are Violent hippys that hurt others..........
