Wow I have been trying out Vista Ultimate and its so much better with the new patches and theres no problem getting drivers now if you know where to look. Also the amount of pirated software you can get for it is excellent compared to last year. (No I wont be telling you where to get that stuff so dont waste bandwidth asking). The extras M$ promised are coming through and the DVD Maker is top quality absolutely great. Chess program could do with a better quality as I beat it 50% of the time on level 8 and 25% on level 10. Any decent program would wip me on level 10 - 100% of the time With 1 gig ram it works like a dream with the Aero interface and even with games playing Yep Vista is a totally different OS to XP, and xp is now looking a bit aged to me whenever I am forced to use it
wow. when my laptop came with vista home premium, immediately after boot it was using one of my 2 gigs of ram. all in all it just wasnt worth it. i couldnt be happier running xp.
Well of course you have to tweak it but if you dont know how you would be better off sticking to something simple like XP or a Linux distro. A lot of people think Vista is just a tarted up XP but when you get into it you realise that for once MS actually built this from the ground up Linux users are strangely silent on the issue of Vista mainly because now service pack 1 has been released it is so much more than XP. Xp now looks old and bedraggled
I'll bluntly say that Vista is a bloated marketing attempt from a corporation that cares only about money. Yeah, I'm a linux user, and I am well educated in both Windows and Linux/Unix operating systems. Every time Microsoft releases a product they claim it is more secure. They did it with ME, 2000, XP, and now Vista. Every single Windows OS has failed to keep the users secure. It is proven and even now some people repeat history. Why, might you ask, would Microsoft release so much coding garbage to the public? It's simple marketing. The public buys the new computer with the new Vista and spends roughly $1,000 on average. But wait... Now you need to spend another $40 on a virus security suite and subscription. But still... Your hawt new Vista computer gets a nasty virus and you are spammed and possibly a victim of identity theft. Oops the bank called and said your overdrawn by $800 and a $150 punishment fee is added for being overdrawn. Then you realize you can't get to the banks website because the virus has crashed your Vista OS and/or it will send your bank login account and password to 10-15 different locations in Uzbekistan. Now you need to pay someone to get your computer fixed. $210 and a low level format. Oops, you just lost $60 in downloaded/purchased music that was on your hard drive and DRM protected. But wait... remember your bank account is overdrawn and the bank froze the account for further investigation. Now you can't even pay to get your computer back from the repair shop. I could rant for hours about how bad Vista. I don't know if you have used Linux in the past year or so. Using Compiz-fusion, you can have a much cleaner, more productive desktop. Not to mention it is a lot faster.
Vista looks very impressive to those who have little knowledge about computers themselves. Fine for the family PC. I'll stick with my 1st edition XP Pro. The one with no security center built into it. I can build up the security to my specs, not Microsoft's. Also, the new Vista SP1 will have the ability to detect bootleg software on your computer, specifically, the two main Windows activation cracks in use currently. God knows what else they watch. My computer is NEVER allowed connect to Microsoft. x
When you buy a brand new car do you expect to have to go and have it fixed? No. However M$ thinks you should have to fix their new OS. I fix computers professionally and get quite a few call from people who want XP on their computers because vista is ether to hard to use or it won't run their software.
MS is the only company I know that makes you pay for fixes to thier problems thru the purchase of newer versions (Windows 98a,b,c ect) Win ME was nothing more than a glamed 98. XP is built off of 2000 pro and so on. Vista was a piss poor attempt to compete with Linux since major countries were dropping MS as a software source due to costs, instablility and lack of support. If you like Vista its simply becuase you know very little about what it is that is on your computer. Too bad schools would not all switch to Linux versions then children would grow up on Linux and then be confused by Windows instead.
I can even mimic the look of Vista on XP Pro with a favorite program of mine: WindowBlinds. http://skins3.wincustomize.com/adni18/wb/5814.jpg x
Actually, every machine on my campus dual boots Linux and XP. Our labs use the Linux install and the library is still using XP. One thing I don't see is Vista.
This is just the people who are too dumb to know if their laptop is switched on or not. Linux is not a good desktop Operating system at all, mainly because its just a tool that people who like to think they know something about computers use to show off with. For most geeks its just a way of saying I am a 1337 us3r doodz. Real It personell hardly use it except for running mail systems
So you're trying to say that Linux is only good for mail systems? Or are you trying to insult people with your lack of knowlege on the subject?
If Vista is the best we can come up with.. god help us. If we had a head on our shoulders we should have talking AI systems by now.. why are we so dumb? [well maybe program AI not neural AI. but who's to argue.. beter than vista] Bill gates is a shithead.. Tens of billions and he feeds u Vista. hahahha I'll stik with xp/sp2 thanks [have to, gamer. cant play with linux.. issues] Occam
Its crap, eventually everyones hardware will be fast enough that it doesn't matter what a bloated waste of resources Vista is, but anyone that upgrades now just so they can have vista is a fool.
So you're trying to say that Linux is only good for mail systems? Or are you trying to insult people with your lack of knowlege on the subject? I would know such things. Our company only uses linux as servers mainly because when we asked for a TCO study to be done on linux as a desktop medium we could not rule out the fact that to train the workforce would take several million UK pounds If I remember things as they were it would be somewhere around £8million (16 million USA dollars (at uk prices))to train 2000 staff properly. Then there was the fact that not every company which creates industry standard software also runs their stuff on linux, this meant further investments in software training and possibly missing out on having the staff with the best qualifications since their degrees and industry qualifications would mean they studied on the windows platform. Its fine for hobyists and geeky scientists but as a serious contender in the marketplace. I think it would take a miracle for it to overtake windows for the foreseeable future. Total cost of ownership rocketed rather than with windows where users were comfortable with the operating system as they used it at home, and more companies competing for training contracts meant any training was far cheaper in the longrun since staff would assist each other in windows environments but would not take the initiative in a linux environment The server industry is well suited to linux especially because of its extra security
This may be a little off topic but I don't mind debating this. To train a workforce of 2,000, doesn't mean sending each person to a College. $16,000,000 divided by 2,000 employees equals $8,000 per employee. Sorry, in no way can you justify spending $8,000 per person. You could have every employee trained for a Linux desktop for about $200. That would include Linux Desktop Training and, also, in addition, OpenOffice Training. But why even pay that? There are free training alternatives. Or you could stage classes specifically scheduled for your business and likely save a lot more. Considering the price of Linux is $0... and the price for Office on Linux is $0... you could save a lot. Then there is Windows Vista. - - - - - $300 Couple that with MS Office Pro - - - - $500 If you have 2,000 machines capable of running the hungry Vista beast, that would be $800 per seat. Of coarse, Vista is very hungry for memory, so you would realistically consider a RAM upgrade for another $100. You might want to buy some Security Suite for protecting against viruses. $50 When the system fails due to the everyday Windows Virus that got through the security scanners... $50-$500. Also you might lose valuable data that cannot be recovered and might hinder the flow of business. OK So that is the cost side of things. If money is your biggest concern, you might want to research these things further. Respectfully, they may be some use. Linux - - - - - $200-$400 Windows- - - ~$1,000+ Respectfully
Rah obviously your staff are the most unmotivated people on the planet. I would learn IT. On my own time and better than any training scheme. Where do you get your people from... 'bored R US' Occam PS.. check your laptop.. i think its still on. PPS i build HIspec game machines .. just so you dont hit me with some quaint PC savy on how clever u are. [mainly because its just a tool that people who like to think they know something about computers use to show off with] Occam
Everyone needs to stop complaining and just count your damn blessings. If you don't like it use something else. otherwise shut the fuck up. people have preferrences on what they like, not everyone is a damn nerd!!!
At the beginning of the year I bought a new PC. Athlon Dual core 3Ghz, 3GB ram, 500GB hard drive, 256mb non integrated graphics card and Vista Premium. Cost with tax around $800. Loved the computer, didn't mind the look and feel of Vista, however not a single thing worked on it. So I figured I'd get my money back, then just upgraded my current PC. P4 2.8Gz, 3GB ram, 160GB hard drive and XP...Only thing that is crap is my video card, although the only thing I do is surf and edit photos. Don't notice any difference with editing. I'd go to Linux, but I can't figure out how to install programs on the damn thing. I know people say it's easy, but I can't figure it out.
