I just finished reading my first Vonnegut book, The Sirens of Titan. I absolutely loved it and can't wait to read more. A friend of mine (the same one who loaned me Sirens) is going to let me borrow Slaughterhouse Five, but I won't be able to see him for a few weeks yet because of our super conflicting schedules, so I'm humbly asking you guys, aside from Sirens and Slaughterhouse, which books by Vonnegut do you suggest?
Those are the only two I've read =P (And Slaughterhouse Five is one of my favorite books) But Welcome to the Monkey House is a great short story collection, and I really don't recommend God Bless You, Dr. Kevorkian
i second ducks recommendation, Welcome to the Monkey House is GREAT. Canary in the Cathouse is also a good book. happy readings!
In Chapter 18 of his book Palm Sunday, "The Sexual Revolution", Vonnegut grades his own works. He states that the grades "do not place me in literary history" and that he is comparing "myself with myself." The grades are as follows: Player Piano: B The Sirens of Titan: A Mother Night: A Cat's Cradle: A-plus God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater: A Slaughterhouse-Five: A-plus Welcome to the Monkey House: B-minus Happy Birthday, Wanda June: D Breakfast of Champions: C Slapstick: D Jailbird: A Palm Sunday: C http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kurt_Vonnegut
Hey thanks! Cool list, that will be quite helpful, thank you! I just ordered God Bless You, Mr Rosewater, Cat's Cradle, Bagombo Snuff Box and Breakfast of Champions from Amazon, along with Women by Bukowski. Thanks to all you guys for your input too, it's very appreciated.
i would add my comments to vonnegut's grades: i think he is being unfair to breakfast of champions and too generous with jailbird and that at one time mother night was my favorite
I haven't read jailbird but I agree about Breakfastr of Champions. I found that book infinatly interesting.
Bagombo snuff box has some great short stories. Some of them so-so but that's how it always is with short stories.
I was going to recommend this even though I've only leafed through it. Mother Night is pretty kickin.
Cat's Cradle was always my favorite Vonnegut novel. As someone who is involved in science I always found this book's message especially relavent. As far as the rest of Vonnegut's work you really can't go wrong w/him as an author, esp. if you dig his sense of humor/irony
