Voter Purging Process Is Shrouded in Secrecy, Prone to Error and Vulnerable to Manipulation

A new study by the Brennan Center for Justice has found voters across the country are being purged through a process that is shrouded in secrecy, prone to error and vulnerable to manipulation. The Brennan Center is calling on states to develop and publish uniform, non-discriminatory rules for purges; provide public notice of pending purges; make purge lists publicly available; and develop rules for individuals to challenge the purge list.

Historic 2008 Election Could See Unprecedented Attempts to Bar African American Voters

On the subject of voter suppression and race, we turn to Queens College political science professor and bestselling author Andrew Hacker. In the latest issue of the New York Review of Books, Hacker writes, Obstacles to getting blacks to vote have always been formidable, but this year there will be barriers—some new, some long-standing—that previous campaigns have not had to face.

The state of Indiana, several years ago, decided, you know, theres such a thing as voter fraud—remember Tammany Hall, so—or people voting five different times, that kind of thing. So, therefore, what they said was, we need voter ID. And they decided everybody who came to vote had to show their drivers license with their photo on it, you know, like at the airport. Well, sounds OK, until you discover that not everybody is a driver.

That is not really accurate. They do not require a "drivers license". A NDID (non-driver ID card) is sufficient. It carries the same validity as a drivers license, without the right to drive.

My Grandfather was a County employee in Hudson County, NJ. during the reign of Mayor Frank Hague and President Franklin Rosevelt. Tombstones voted, thats a fact.

I dont think that flashing identification at voting time is such a big issue, I have to ID: buying beer, buying cigaretttes, gambling at a casino, flying on a plane, driving, entering a federal or county building, why not during voting? What is the big deal?

Ever see a Senior Citizens bus pull up at election day? The old codgers are so stricken with alzheimers they would vote for Daffy Duck. Interesting to see the Health Aides pulling the levers for the aflicted. We could use a little less of this BS.

I'm not saying one kind of voter fraud is better than another, but it seems that when these issues arise it's either because the Democratic Party goes too far to recruit voters, or the Republican Party goes too far to disenfranchise voters.

Shouldn't a democracy err on the side of suffrage?

    bump!

So, what some of you are saying is, if you are sick you don't deserve to vote.

Tyranny of the few by the many is ok because you don't find it burdensome to get an ID with your healthy body and ample economic resources.

There is just one problem: the US Constitution.

Voter caging is just what all this hooplah is about. It's not about Obama's connections with Acorn, it's about keeping out the poor vote. And they'll probably win this time around. It's clear Mavericks aren't interested in letting everyone eligible to vote be able to cast a vote.

It's more about instilling fear and loathing and only allowing the priveledged to vote.

The republicans count on you not voting or your votes not counting. That's the only way they can win.

The only true terrorists of today are those that tell you: you can't vote or your vote doesn't count. And the only party I see doing that today is the republican party.

Aren't we fighting for democracy around the world, allowing them to vote? Why shouldn't even the poor people in the US be allowed to vote? Didn't we cheer all the purple fingers in Iraq, did they have to bring birth certificates and photo id?

Go to the polls, vote maybe they'll throw your votes out, but right now what they are counting on is that you won't vote at all. It's the only way they can win.

I know Rat tells you all the time votes don't count, but this time it does. Your vote is your voice.
