I was wondering why hippies are stigmatized by driving volkswagons?

Don't you know the VW started as a Nazi company to support the German war machine.

Don't you know that the word "volkswagon" was coined by Hitler? (in a demand passed down to engineers to develop a "peoples car")

Don't you know that the VW beetle was designed, in person, by Hitler?

Don't you know that VW machines killed thousands of people during WWII?

    Um..okay.

They're practical, and cool-looking, and fun, and fit many people in them, and you can camp out them if you want. Yeah, your eating meat is killing 80 animals a year, are you not going to do that anymore?
Who the hell cares who made them 60 years ago, we're not killing people with them anymore, so give it up.

My first car was a 1969 powder blue VW beetle with original interior and AM only radio. (Plus no A/C - cuz it didn't exist - and that sucks in Texas.)

For around town stuff that kind of car is fine, but it isn't reliable. My VW broke down on me more times than I can count and I missed a lot of days at work because of it (lucky I lived in dorms across the street from my college).

I had to replace the engine (no small feat considering you have to JACK UP THE ENTIRE THING just to get it out from the bottom - won't fit out the top), pressure plate, gear shift, wiring for the tail lights (another time to jack up the car), gas tank, etc......... in the end it just wasn't worth it. I was spending all the money from my job on fixing the car instead of paying for school. I cleaned it up and sold it to my father, and in turn got an econo-box that is better for the environment AND more reliable. Sure - it isn't as "cool" but my dead bear stickers look just as happy on the back window.

    Love.

Its wierd, I don't really like VWs that much, but the 3 cars I've owned are a 72 super beetle (powder blue too), 84 jetta, and 97 jetta. The beetle was a great. simple but classic car. I sold it to a friend, who turned it into a dog house. The 84 was a real pos, but the 97 has been good to me so far.

Thats the most idiotic thing i've ever read.

Who do you think is dying in Iraq to "feed" your SUVs, V8 engined petroleum sucking giant show-off ass cars?

Which country in the United Nations is blocking the food aid to the starving countries just because the food is not genetically altered as they want it to be (USA, ops). Maybe it's because USA wants to create patents for bread and apple and the such.

Why do you use Diesel engines? Dont you know they were invented by the evil Germans?

Why do you use plastics, silicone?

Why did Americans go to Moon, dont you know that USA's early rocket designs were taken from Germany, right after it's fall?
Dont you know that those V1 and V2 rockets killed thousands of people?

Why do you not ban the importing of Porsche cars? Dont you know that they were the producers of self propelled tank artillery?

Where the hell did you hear this? Rudolf Diesel was a frenchman. He was of german decent, but he spent his whole life in paris, and later in England because of the franco-prussian war. Not only that, but Diesel was a complete fucking genius and I think he deserves a little more respect (and a little more research, while you're at it) than that. He's done alot more good for the world that you think.
And about the VW thing... I think they're great cars, but if anyone thinks they don't break down, you're out of your fucking mind. Chances are if your a kid (16-25) you are'nt going to be able to afford a nice vw that someone has already fixed up, so you're going to get a piece of crap that you have work on for five years trying to get it running good. Look forward to it breaking down at every worst moment, like when you're late for work or when the cops are chasing you down the street. Modern VW's run great though, I have nothing but praise about them, they're great cars.
Anyways, does anyone like any other equally retro cars, like the Gremlin:[IMG]The VW Thing:[IMG]
    Or the AMC Pacer?[IMG]

First of all, its VolkswagEn, not VolkswagOn.

Now that we've gotten that out of the way, I've owned a '98 Beetle & I now drive '00 Beetle. I have always loved VWs & whenever some idiot (no offense, cause my brother says it all the time) points out that they were commissioned to be designed by Hitler, I just say that they must be the silver lining. I've always wanted an older Beetle, but I don't have enough income at the moment to buy & restore one. I also love the campers & love love love Things.

    woo hoo! to VWs!!!

Yeah, in the late 1800's. I don't think the "evil germans"(obviously a reference to Hitler and the Nazi party) were brainwashing refridgerator engineers to create engines for military vehicles. Not only that, but the Nazi party was'nt even founded till 1919, which was quite a while after rudolf graduated.

1st of all I don't own a diesel, I don't drive an SUV, I don't think you could prove that the "evil US" is blocking food to the "wonderful world", I never went to the moon. I have ridden in a jet though, and that was the Germans. So making your attack personal didn't work. Just because I'm not a hippy doesn't mean I don't have some conviction.

What I'm saying is you hippies will boycott anything that involves killing animals or mistreatment of the enviroment, but for some reason since VW's aren't killing people TODAY then they are morally correct! The fact that thousand of Americans were killed by this company doesn't matter. If I were to say that thousand of Palastinians were killed by them many years ago you'd all be up in arms.

The philosophy that you are citing is fundamentally flawed; previous action, regardless of damages caused, is simply in the past and should have no bearing on the future.

Going back to the USA BAD comment; does the $8 billion/year we give to starving nations, $25 bil/yr. Bush earmarked for AIDS prevention in Africa and S. E. Asia, the billions given from US charities and the rest of the aid that the US provides through the UN not count as good deeds? Does it not matter, and you'll only point out the theoretical evilness fundamental to being an American?

Just so you know: America had done way more good than bad. At any time that you stop appreciating that you should leave and enjoy the comforts of some wonderful nation like Cambodia!

If there had not been a world war, you wouldn't have existed.
Notice; I didnt even mention the germans ot the VW.

About the US policies, it takes ages to discuss. But just for cambodia, the USA has dropped more bombs on her than it did on Japan. I dont even mention the 13 year long civil war, started by the USA and the food embagos.
As for the donations, they arent in money. They are done in food which is genetically manipulated. go read my "emperor's new clothes" post

I dont say he was evil or anything, I think he's a very respectable inventor, and a human. I dont give a fuck about national IDs. Obviously, when I say "evil germans" I use certain amount of sarcasm.

You cant discuss historical matters as: He graduated at this date, NSDAP was founded in the year.... They are all small dots on the course of history and although I'm not refering to the chaos theory, I dont think industrial inventions did not have any effect on markets and thus politics, especially talking for the climax of the "modern" age.

Yet, I'm not saying all this in order to support my sentence "Why do you use Diesel engines? Dont you know they were invented by the evil Germans?" for
the word Diesel doesnt refer to its inventor. But in a broader sense, it implies the "german war machine -industry-" that HippyHunter was trying to get at by using the VW cars as his claim's backbone.

Perhaps our entire space program should be abandoned because of the contributions made by German scientists such as Werner Von Braun who headed the V1 and V2 projects which killed many allied soldiers and civilians. Or Mitsubishi Motors should be boycotted because they made the Zero fighter plane.

Hippy Hunter, are you really that anal, or are you just trying to annoy us?

The Space Program comparison isn't applicable. Why? 1st: The Space Program isn't full of hippies. 2nd: The Space Program isn't still using the exact model that the Nazi's developed. 3rd: The Space Program doesn't go around telling everyone how to live morally. 4th: There are benefits to using German engineering for the Space Program; for hippies VW's are a trend and can easily be changed to something more efficient, less polluting, more powerful.

Simply, there is a better alternative for hippies but they insist on selling out their condemnation of all things for a social trend.
