I heard this on CNN on December 14 about Wal-Mart:

Walmart has gone to the WTO to get the organization to overrule small towns in America that have enacted ordinances to keep the supergiant Walmart stores from being built in town. These townspeople have decided that they don't want the stores because not only do they drive small businesses into bankruptcy, but they don't want the traffic that comes with them, as people from miles around will come to town to shop at the Walmart, destroying the small town charm. Bastrop, Texas is a good example of a small town ruined by a Walmart supercenter. Traffic is horrendous, and Texas 71 is now a 6 lane freeway right through Bastrop.

Basically, the sleazebags who own Walmart want to give small towns the middle finger and build their titanic stores anyway and don't give a damn about the effects.

What's next from Walmart? Are they going to get the WTO to criminalize
boycotting of Walmart or require us to shop Walmart at least once a week. I know that sounds crazy, but it may happen.

It's also crazy how some people seem to be addicted to Walmart. I call them "walnuts" or "walmartians".

I absolutely hate WalMart and refuse to shop there. I don't care if they're the only place in town that might have what I need, I'd rather go without it. I'm too stubborn to set foot in there, I think I would burst into flames if I did. ;)

Wal-Mart is more addictive than crack, i swear, I know some people who litterally go there every day. They rely in it more than they do food. It makes me sick.

Would you all like to hear something Disturbing?

I live in a small Rural community. About 6 miles west of here is a small town similar to Mayberry. They had a walmart, it was small though but good enough for the town of only about 3,000 people. A HUGE super-walmart opened up down the road in what was once a forest. The towns people held a parade, and had cheerleaders perform routines in the parking lot on its opening day.

Now that ,my friends, is insanity and greed.

Not to mention America at its Best(sarcasm).

ppl celebrating the store opening of a Walmart in a town where it's welcomed does not disturb me. What disturbs me is Walmart having the gall to demand that a world body of unelected officials override what elected officials have enacted on behalf of their constituents, that is an assault on democracy.

Get the message Walmart and have the grace to stay out where you're not welcomed:mad:

capitalism in general is founded on addiction isn't it really. But I guess, in my case, it's don't throw stones unless you..er...have none to throw. You know, that biblical thing. Plank in the eye. Whatever.

But yes this is disturbing. For those in the UK, by the way, the local equivalent to Walmart is Asda. So don't go thinking this doesn't concern you. Boycott asda if you want to boycott anything. It kinda worked with nestle, at least they have a fairtrade brand now, which is the height of irony, i know, but at least it's a start.

i had to go to super walmart the other day because i could not efford not to.
It really pisses me off how you can fight so hard to avoid that store and if you dont have much money you end up going any way.
When i leave the country i plan on never going back to that store.

It would be horrible if Walmart won this thing... I go to college in a wonderful little town, and I've never lived in a place like it before. It's great! Walmart has tried to build a store there, but they aren't allowed to because of Ellensburg's laws or something like that. If that changes I will be really sad. How can the WTO have the power to do something like that? That's not how things are supposed to work...

Walmart is like McDonald's, they are a good restroom stop, and you don't have to buy anything! LOL

Yes, Walmart gets cities to pay for right of ways, and price cuts on sewer, water, and electric. While the little man gets buried!

How is the WTO going to force the will of Sam Waltons Store? By sending in the blue helmet brigade and lock the town down?

Finally we agree on something Hefe, as this was my question:

WTF is the World Trade Organization going to do to get Wally World into Slackjaw, West Virginia? I mean, I hate them as much as anyone, but holy crispers.

When you post something like this, post a source. A real source, like a link to CNN. Not some "I heard this on satellite radio" bullshit. If you don't, and you post something so completely outrageous (like this story) the only thing your post accomplishes is making people who leap at nothing leap at nothing, and it makes you look like a total tool.

Now I have to go to WV to protest a UN invasion. Thanks, pal. Hey, did you hear Bill Gates is giving everyone a million dollars just for using XP on public library computers?

Walmart is the devil. We have a local store near our house that charges a couple of dollars more for each product than Walmart, but we still go there because we hate everything that BIG corporations stand for. Eventually everything will be owned by the big beast.

I met Sam Walton once, and he was a really nice man, I met him at a fish fry! He was a regular guy you could talk to, but after he died and the corporate guys took over, there was just GREED!

Sam got up and got a big plate of fish and passed them out to everyone. This was a centennial celebration for a small town, POP. 100, his grandfather owned a store in, after he worked for the railroad. They sent him an invitation, and he said he would come if it were kept secret, and no reporters or cameras were there. This was on Friday, on Saturday all the news crews were there looking for him! LOL
He and his brother flew their little two seater plane to a neighboring town. I guess we visited for about 20 minutes, he talked to everyone, as long as the said nothing about Walmart. Just hunting and fishing, how many children they had, that type of thing!

I don't think there's any argument that Sam Walton was a nice guy. He wasn't even a marketing genius, he just wanted to give the American consumer a quality product at a low price because JC Penney and Sears & Roebuck were known for incredible markups.

It's the board of directors and the marketing dogs and the corporate gurus and the buyers and right down to the floor managers of the Chinese sweatshops that everyone wants to string from the trees. It's a fact that the manufacturers use slave labor and Wal-Mart turns the other cheek, treats their employees like indentured servants, all while driving honest, hardworking owner/operators out of business. Home Depot does the same, Best Buy, Office Depot, Sam's, BJ's, Food Lion, Safeway, as does every other major chain in the US.

And the last time I checked it was still called "commerce".

Yeah well, whatever, Sam Walton and Wal-Mart can fuck themselves. Commerce is equal to genocide then. Do you wanna argue with me?

Um yeah. Sam Walton has been dead for almost 16 years. If you would read, you would know I hate Walmart as much as everyone else here. The hardcore rise to mediocrity and slave labor manufacturing has mostly happened SINCE his death. Blaming him accomplishes nothing.

But his corpse rising from the dead and attempting to sodomize itself is a nice visual, thanks.

Never speak ill of the dead. And never speak nice of Walmart.
