hey Joel, I don't have much experience myself but what these people will tell you is to stop combing, wash your hair once a week/second week with a residue-free shampoo (dr Bronners is always recommended,) separate them so they don't all lump together, play with your hair and not to use wax.

for pics, check this thread out: http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=270541

I've been trying the neglect route described above for about six weeks but I've gotten impatient and will backcomb my hair this week :)

allright, well, most people here will tell you that the professionals aren't all that pro :)
what I gather from browsing this forum a fair bit is that you would be much better off having a friend backcomb them for you, for various reasons. one of those reasons being salons will charge upwards of $100/hour, and it'll take at least a couple of hours.

of course, the decision is yours. I'm going to look up backcombing instructions on the internet and have my friend who has no experience take care of it. I recommend you spend some time on this forum to see what experiences people have, with getting started naturally, backcombing, with/without wax, and salons.

backcombing is when you basically just comb you hair...up. but, whatever you decide to do, you wont need wax. backcombing, neglect, whatever, you can do it without wax. and really MOST professionals will put wax or gel and crap in your hair! if you are interested in backcombing, you should get a friends to do it. it will be cheaper, probably no money at all. plus, you'll know you can trust them. however, if you ever do go to a salon, be POSITIVELY sure that they wont use anything but a comb to backcomb your hair. depending on where you live, it could be very hard to find someone "professional" to do this. your friends might just be as good as them, anyway.
and did you say that you didnt wash your hair? if you did, them you really must start. the key to dreadlocking hair naturally is only based on a few things - clean hair, and ripping, to make sure that they don't eat each other up, despite what method you use.

okay. so this is the only site i found to teach you to backcomb.
    http://www.dreadheadhq.com/make_dreadlocks_dread_it_up_backcomb.php
but dont use wax or rubberbands like that site says! only listen to how to backcomb. the rubberbands aren't good for your dreads, and we all know what wax will do. that site...is not a friendly site...
but, anyway, good luck. happy dreading

start washinhg with bronners and be patient
    dreads take time

if yoiu are in a hurry backcomb
    nothing else

professionals will mean restarting unless your very lucky
90% of em use wax most make a total mess and usualy ppl restart em the next day

plus then your out hundress of dollars

yeah don't go to a "professional". if you want natural looking dreads, just go natural. wash it every once in a while and no combing, and you're on your way.

just backcomb starting with small sections. its not impossible to do yourself but your arms get really tired. look on you tube for instruction videos on how to backcomb, but skip the wax. if its uniform dreads you want, palm rolling can help (try not to overdo it, it can break hairs) or crocheting in loose hairs. just look around here, you will find lotsa info.

I would STRONGLY reccommend www.knottyboy.com instead.
Their products are cleaner and more effective than DreadHead. I use Knottyboy products.

Section, Backcomb, small amount of wax if you wish to give it a hold, then wash after a week and palmroll.

dude. no wax. what will it do...hold your dreads for a bit to let them look neater? and then what? try to wash them out and just end up having the wax there for a loong time for things to get stuck in them? dreads arent about them looking neat. you cant force them, they are the most natural hairstyle in the world. seriously, wax isnt worth the time or the money.

oh and that lil kid in the pic u posted was posdsibly natural (his hair looked olike it would dread ez naturaly) but if not was just backcombed
do not waste your money on a kit
    kits are a scam
    all u need is patience
but if your short on patience a 3$ flea comb and hours of painful backcombing

yopur mom doesnt need hairstyling experience any1 can backcomb

oh and scatteredleaves you said excessive palmrolling dammages hair which is true but themn u said crichett the loose hairs
that is 10 times as dammaging your poking holes thru the dreads tearring the hell ouyutta the hairs in the process
palmrolling will result in fake looking too perfect dreads which are weaker and take alotta extra wasted effort
dreads are a natural process which result in very organic looking dreads meanning imperfections like lumps loops twists curls flat spots ..you name itr..all give eacjhh dread a unique charachter
the more u do to your dreads the less charachter they have the less unique each dread becomes
dreads should be like fingerprints..no 2 dreads alike
dont be overluy obseessive about the process it will happen if u let it over time u can kickstart it with backcombing (only do once) but after that anything else u do is wasted effort
