In the summer, garage saling is probably my favorite weekend activity and between time I love to go to the thrift store. My favorite is a dress from St. Vincent's that I paid 4 bucks for....I found a picture of it online, and the place is selling it for 85! Here it is: http://www.vivalavintage.com/store/...ess-w--Smocked-Waistline-DR7blFLsmokWRAP.html Hopefully someone else with share their favorite finds. It's so much fun to go to a bunch of sales without finding anything, and then you come across the sale with that one PERFECT item!
I found the awesomest frickin' pair of sunglasses just today. They are like the ones the bad guy wears in "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou." A little small, but sweet.
For 10 bucks I found this really awesmoe Indian tapestry at an antique store. It was a man and a woman on a camel. I wish I had a picture of it to share, its really beautiful.
That dress is fantastic! Definitely a good find! I'm a huge thrift shopper, most everything I own is second hand (at least in some form). Here are a few of my favorites. An over sized glass goblet with peace signs on it. Its amazing. Many, many of awesome hippie skirts. You would be amazed at how many ppl buy skirts and then ditch them bc they are "hand wash" only. You'd think that if they had such a problem with it, they'd checked the label!? This amazingly cushiony chair I'm sitting in. Its a bit on the ugly side, but it serves as a couch perfectly for me (super tiny place). Only day I'll get around to making a slipcover (unless I find one first) I've also found nearly all my wall covering from handmade blankets, woven Mexican blankets, random prints, tapestries (the most recent is small and earth colored (lots of brown & orange) with turtle silhouettes on it) and even wooden & metal art.
I always keep my eye out for pretty middle eastern or celtic tapestries, but I've yet to find one second-hand. I would love one for my wall but just don't want to play $30+ dollars for it. Thrift stores are great for books and record albums as well, super cheap! My most recent find at a Good Will was some flowy bellydancing pants in earthtones, and a long crocheted vest (the sleeveless kind that hangs down to your calves). edit: that is so true about hippie skirts - there are at least a dozen new ones every time I go into the shop.
Go to flea markets! I found so many vintage things for cheap! I got a 60's looking fondue pot for $3 and a cute 70's intricate orange and red glass candle holder for $3 also. It was super awesome! And that dress is cute!! I definitely need to go to thrift stores more!
Ooh, my wise chinese man statue I found 3 years ago. http://photos-g.ak.************/photos-ak-sf2p/v80/228/13/511763844/n511763844_88158_5079.jpg
I don't know if this counts, but the other day my boyfriend's neighbors were cleaning out their mom's garage...she passed away earlier this year....to get ready to sell the house. We helped and I brought home a lot of stuff...a jewelry box filled with vintage costume jewelry....nothing's worth anything, but it's all beautiful and from the 30s-60s I'm guessing. A ton of old clothing from 60s and before....not all of them fit, but I sew and plan to put them to good use...a couple of books, including a Wind and The Willows printed in 1902 or something...some knick-knacks and a few board games. It was my lucky day.
