For me it wasn't monsters, old age, or death. It was losing my heart in adulthood. As a kid I would see adults and notice that most were no longer enthusiastic and light-hearted. Some had long faces and seemed mechanical. I never wanted to become that way. .
I had a reoccurring dream that I have trouble remembering. That terrified me, as did spiders and swimming pool plugs.
I was once told by an older relative that the maggots that I was looking at in a pile of garbage I had disturbed, were baby dragons and as he thumped on the ground, he convinced that the momma dragon was in hot pursuit of me for messin with it's chillins. I ran away screaming in terror, half blinded by the tears streaming from my eyes I was nearly run over by a car.
losing my parents.. and the dark, i still hate the dark though... ghosts and stuff, freaks me out!!!!.. and walkin down that alley way were the junkies and alcoholics hung out when i was goin to school
Gilda Radner did a beauty of a sketch on childhood fears on the old SNL show. She kept seeing things in her dark bedroom that scared her. It started out with a clump of clothes and then kept getting worse, like a band of gypsies hiding under her bed. If I find it on youtube I'll post it. .
After watching pet cemetery when |I was younger, I wouldn't put my feet out of the bed at night in case the mean baby got me.

Ground hogs and mice. When I was young there was a ground hog who lived under the steps of my grandparents house and it would come out and chase us up the step. It terrified me. There were mice in the house at times as well and they would always scurry in front of me, or so it seemed. I am no longer bothered by ground hogs but to this day I am terrified of mice.
amputees always freaked me out it may have stemmed from shaking the 'hand' of one of my dad's friends, only to find out it was a lifeless piece of plastic. or from the Terry Fox videos we had to watch in school
Fires. Knew a few people who lost everything in a house fire and I used to have nightmares about it. I remember one, where it was weird because my only concern was my blankie. Actually.. loosing my blankie was probably my biggest fear overall. I was a weirdo.
The death of my parents was number one, but I remember that from a very early age that I would have to force myself to look out the windows at night during a thunderstorm. I always felt that if I looked out there in the pitch black night long enough I would see someone right on the other side of the window looking back at me during one of the flashes of lightning. I still made myself look though.
