These posts bug me soooo much, and I was thinking about that the other day, and I realized "Hey, I used to be one of these people.". In fact, I think most of us were at one time. In the beginning, when i first discovered this site (waaay back in Grade 6, and now I'm approaching grade 11! It's been a while!), one of the first posts I made was about what do hippies wear and how do I be a hippie. Juvinile, yes, but people did help me along the way. Over the years, i've grown as a person and learned a lot about myself, as well as about the "traditional" hippie lifestyle. I'm not saying I try to live up to the so-called stereotype (Yes, I do wear bellbottoms, long skirts, peasent tops, tiedyes, and hold some/many of the traditional hippie values, I write poetry/songs/stories, I love art and paint a lot. But I do not do drugs, I am not against the government-certain people yes *cough*bush*cough*-but not the government in general, etc). So when new-comers who are interested in the lifestyle ask questions like this, do not attack them and say "Just be you!" because many of them have not yet found who they are yet. I think we should try harder to offer more insight and explain things to them without being judgemental and calling them posers.
good points, however the original "hippy" look was a pack of freaks just being themselves. we should find kinder ways to get that across. I have an odd Q, if one is a hippy outside the US, wouldn't they be examining their own government as well? such as a UK hip-type disagreeing with Blair? C'mon its so easy to dislike Bush. I've done it through two of 'em. Try something a tad more difficult ;P
Hmmm...I dislike Ashcroft! I dislike Wolfowitz! I dislike Powell! I dislike Rice! I dislike Gordon Smith! Lol, that better? Anyway, I fully agree Sunburst. People can be annoying when they're simply naive, but pointing that out to them, especially in a not so nice way doesn't do any good... the only thing to do really is just think about what you yourself were thinking at points of growth in your life, you know? We can be a place for empathy....or I guess we can have a little bit of this is the future and it's harsh, learn to deal with us, too.
I think saying "Just be you" is so much more important than telling them certain styles of the trade. If you do that, they get into this ugly cliche phase we've seen before thats just damn irritating to watch and peace and love every other word till their meanings are left so raped that hearing them makes you feel queasy
Totally agree Sunburst I remember when you were younger and made the daftest posts. Can't be more than a year ago. It's amazing how much we grow in such a short time. Can't remember being very 'poser-ish' myself, or at least I kept it to myself. But I've definetly grown a lot, and wasn't really Sage when I started. So yes we have to guide the younger ones. Be gentle of course, they are just starting out.
Hey we all have our poser stage... Its just a matter of how fast you get the message and spread it. Like me... I did the hot topic hardware thing for... About 10 minutes, then I decided I didnt need it to do damage. I still wear shit on my boots sometimes or the ocasional slim bracelet but I usually wear stuff I make
I really really don't like the way this government is pushing my country in a more non-social direction.. and especially I really disagree with their way of treating refugees and cutting money at several area's that I think are very important. So.. yes.. I disagree with politics in my own country as well.. but I think a lot of people disagree with Bush/US politics because they have such a strong influence on our own countries as well.. and not just the politics.. for example, there are now some Glen Miller orientated youthprisons now here as well, something I'm not at all happy with. But.... completely different discussion Bottomline: I'm not really looking at official boundaries when it comes to human/animal/whatever rights etc.
You know what's sad? People in several countrie OUTSIDE the usa hate Bush My mom saw Farhenheit 911 and was talking about how she loved it and added "And it was great because I hate Bush. He's an idiot." I think he's a complete moron and can barely take care of his daughters, let alone an entire country! But anywho, yes, I used to very much be one of those people. As I said before, saying "be yourself" is a very broad topic, and I found that it never helped me at all until just recently, most teenagers and even adults do not yet know who they are, therefore that does not give them a lot of advice. Over the last few years on this site, I've learned about thew "hippie" lifestyle as well as myself, and most of it has come from reading the posts/threads/thoughts of other similar-thinking people. I'm glad that my friend discovered this site (she was goofing around on the school computer in grade 6), because it has greatly affected my entire life. I've learned so much from the people here, so thank you, all!
Fahrenheit 9/11 is the best movie since gone with the wind... actually, gone with the wind was a p.o.s. but you get the point.
You were also asking whether hippies in other countries question their governement. Yes we do! Also we german hippies, even though our government did not invade iraq. There are many things to question and criticize......
You know, all the anti-bushism is just another trend. He's gonna get re-ellected, we all know it in our deepest heart of hearts, because americans are in fact shallow bastards and dont like Kerry because most of them havent even heard of him before this election.
Finally! I thought I was the only one who thought that! It really DOES seem like all this anti-bush stuff is a trend. Just take a look at hollywood. I mean, it's always been liberal, but not like this. Suddenly, it's become "cool" to say the most disgraceful and crude things about our president. Granted, I've never been a Bush supporter, not in the least, but it does seem like some people on the left are blinded into thinking certain things without having any real knowledge on the issue at hand. Of course, there's nothing wrong with changing your opinion/stance on certain issues, but some of the stuff happening right now is just ridiculous. That's just my 2 cents, and it really has nothing to do with the original topic. Yeah, I think everyone, to a certain degree, was a "poser" at one point, but people are just looking for someplace they can fit in. Granted, I never went through that hippie-poser stage. Perhaps because I already went through it in my goth, punk, and 80's stages. But to each his own. Most people grow out of it, though. Thankfully.
