I use an age old Carl Sagan Quote usually.

    "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence."

Joe - "have you ever had a face to face conversation with him/her/it before?"
    Billy - "no"
Joe - "neither have i or anyone else on this planet"
Billy - "fine...but don't you read the bible or other religious scriptures?"
Joe - "those were written by a human, not god, it sounds like a means to control people"
Billy - "i've been told its the word of god"
Joe - "yea, written by a HUMAN!"

its something along those lines anyway

I don't go out of my way to piss all over other people's beliefs. So I've basically never have that argument since I got out of high school and got past my angsty "fuck society" phase.

I have not had anyone discuss religion with me in over twenty years. Some street preachers and Jehovah's Witlesses have tried, but I just slam the door in their face or otherwise ignore them. I never debate or argue with them, it's pointless.

To me it's not about raging against the machine or anything, more of just a discussion on beliefs and rationality. I don't believe it is "pissing" on other people's beliefs, so much as just displaying why you don't believe in god..

I mean if telling someone your lack of belief is offensive, I think that someone displaying their belief should be offensive as well.. And that's just not true.

I say I don’t believe in god because you still walk the earth and any god would have removed that mess long ago.

My point was, that I've never had a reason to discuss this in well over twenty years. Almost everyone I know considers themselves to be Christian, yet I've never had a discussion about religious beliefs with anyone since high school.

And the only way I ever would have a reason to discuss my lack of belief is if I deliberately made an issue out of it.

If you're regularly defending your beliefs, you're almost certainly going out of your way challenge other peoples beliefs. And I just don't see the point of instigating religious arguments with other people.

It's been my experience, that most athiests live to stir the pot with Christians (they usually don't bother challenging other religions). And they're primarily motivated by a hatred of Christianity and Christian people, otherwise they'd take the 'don't give a shit' attitude that I have.

I sigh, crack my knuckles, take a deep breath and proceed to tear them apart. But I will always stop the argument if they utter the phrase "because of faith".

    Good times.

Not meaning to put down your answer or argue, but I am wary of this one because it supports ignorant believers idea that science requires as much faith as religion.

I think I hear people get questioned why they do believe in god more often. Depends on where you ask it probably but the majority here seems to find the option that there isn't a god at all quite plausible. I also think the question why do you believe in god is more intriguing (because of faith does not seems to be a righteous answer here by the way) :D

If asked, I explain that I will never believe in the divinity of written text.

I'd have to agree with you on most of your statement. A lot of people are just angrily stirring up things to "rock the boat" if you will. But if I'm asked about my beliefs I won't lie and tell them I believe in God. And it does happen from time to time that people will discuss things like religion and politics and such, and I'm not afraid to tell them my opinion on the matter.

I do disagree with you about just "not giving a shit", especially when people are violently against the idea of you being atheist. When it crosses into things like political policies and school functions and blatantly starts to be shoved down one's throat one has two options.

    1. Take it like a bitch
    2. Fight back

But I do like to discuss my lack of belief online. It just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy, you know?
