Where does the word "Hippy" come from? If I see a hippy, how should I react, as I have heard that hippies arent normal people and their ways and customs are different. Do hippies "come out" like gay people do? and have to risk being called names such as "tree hugger" etc? Yeah, whats being a hippy all about? I may try it when I retire. I met a woman at Glastonbury festival who was about 70 years old, she was actually in a band playing there on the main stage - I think she played violin or something and she was so cool. she said that she is a hippy but there arent many left and that because she is one of the last real hippies she might get a state funeral, then she started cackling and remembering the past a lot and I told her she should ease up on the dope but she said she werent stoned just old I thought I had better leave incase I got surrounded by hippies and everyone thought I was their leader (too uncool). So I left her but bought her some beads first and that seemed to make her remember when she met Mick Jagger in the 1960's but I had had enough of hearing about all these dead popstars she kept telling me of and she said you go sonny, I'm old and senile, and I couldnt disagree but felt glad i had met her so I shook her hand and left I think thats the only real hippy i've ever met
Lol….. I don’t think that we come out…. There’s nothing to hide from…… And I love being called a tree hugger…. I am one … in a very literal sense…. And a hippy is someone who in their heart cares about our planet and think differently…. Down to earth you know?
Really, we are a load of people who have an alternitive ideology. There are still many hippies around, really there are hippie families who raise their kids up as hippies. Hippies are still alive and well.
pretty sure mick jagger isnt dead and i dont think theres any set of rules for hippie customs. well, now that i think about it arent they all just people????
I didn't start calling myself a hippy until other people started calling me a hippy, but I called myself a tree-hugger long before that, so...
IMO there's a difference between a hippie & a tree-hugger. I'm an Environmentalist/tree-hugger, but not a hippie.
There is an environment section here on hip forums (dead but here never the less) And I wasn't aware that you HAD to be a hippie to join this website, but then again I never did read the EULA so I may be mistaken.
Being a "hippie" is a state of mind. As for the origins of the word, before the hippies were the Beats....Hipsters (1950s). The hippies were the next generation after the Hipsters, and the name evolved from Hipster to Hippy. There are a lot of people who call themselves hippies, but who aren't at all. And you cant really tell a hippy by their outer appearance.
Wooo Bro My hairz long to but ma parentz wnt me to kut and leik i said N0 fight da systm bro lovepeacchickngreass
k then i can make a sweet wig ouda it and be 154lif! Actually the only thing I dont like aobut long hair is burning it when I go to light a bowl. *Ewww
Thanks for your replies people ! Ok I was misinformed about Mick Jaggers life status - I thought he had died but someone just told me that I got him mixed up with the Queen-mother that had died. Well they looked so similar ever since Mick reached his 70's. I am better informed about Hippies, so you dont come out like gay people and some of you are tree huggers and some arent. One feature seems to be your hair, its quite long, is that because you havent got much money so you cant afford to get it done? Oh but now I am confused again. So some people say they are hippies but arent? well whats the point of that? Do they get refused entry to hippy festivals if they own up to being a stockbroker, or whatever they really are? So there must be some people who are really hippies who say "I am a hippy" but because no-one can tell just by looking at them, then they are not believed and shunned by normal people and hippies alike ! This seems unjust, as those who are not hippies but put up a convincing con trick are obviously taking a place in hippydom they dont deserve. ps I just had an idea, you should all give each other a lie detector test and ask just one question "are you a hippy"? that way you could tell if they were just pretending.
accroding to erowid... The term hippie (or hippy) derives from "hip" or "hipster" used during the late 50s and 60s to describe someone who was a part of the Beat scene. Someone who was hip to the scene, or in the know. One of the first recorded uses of the term hippie was in a Sept 5 1965 article about the San Francisco counter-culture by writer Michael Fallon. The term was not generally used by those who were a part of the hippie culture, but rather by those on the outside writing about them. The term became popular with the media in the mid- to late-1960s as young people flocked to San Francisco, but also picked up negative conotations for many Americans. flower child n (1967) : a hippie who advocates love, beauty, and peace hippie or hippy [ websters unabridged ] ya person, esp. of the late 1960s, who rejected established institutions and values and sought spontaneity, direct personal relations expressing love, and expanded consciousness, often expressed externally in the wearing of casual, folksy clothing and of beads, headbands, used garments, etc. [ websters ] a person who rejects the mores of established society (as by dressing unconventionally or favoring communal living and advocates a nonviolent ethic; broadly : a long-haired unconventionally dressed young person. I agree completely. I have met a number of "hippies" over the years that would only accept others who looked exactly like them (long hair, etc.), instead of trying to find out what that person really thought about things (which is what counts).
