What is Scientology?

I was raised agnostic and am therefore not a very religous person. I never saw that South Park episode but I did try looking scientology up a few weeks ago...But really what is Scientology (anyone clarify)?

basically a cult based on a science fiction writer's crazy ideas, that tries to pass itself off as a legitimate religion

 

well, if you've ever read strainger in a strainge land, the 'reverend' foster is a kind of cross between laurance ronald hubbard (hienline's college room mate and 'mr scientology' himself) and your typical evangellical nutcase. fosteriteism being somewhat mostly a bit of an honest satire of both. for anyone who has been handed a copy of "pschydynamics" or whatever the're using for an introductory text these days, and started wading through it and asking themselves, "what the hell is this?", i would highly recomend reading hienlines strainger in a strainge land. i'm not claiming this as a litteral explanation in any sort of exact sense, but it will throw perhapse a bit of light of perspective on where 'scientology' 'fits in' to this (or some?) universe.

That's an interesting connection there, themnax, because Robert Heinlein and L.Ron Hubbard knew each other and were friends.

ok y'all -- when i researched this a couple of months ago I went to the Wikipedia article but it was really too much info for me to grasp just the general concepts...So I asked y'all and I get a link to that same article -- Can someone please just briefly explain this to me without Wikipedia links? BtW: I'm not trying to convert, I'm merely just curious...

It aint any weirder than all the other religeons of this planet. It just gets a bad press. It aint considered a 'legitimate religeon' because all the others have been absorbed into the mainstream. [as sad as that is] . If it makes these followers happy , then fair play to them.

What made me smile was the news trying to make Tom Cruis's marriage ceremony seem 'odd' by saying what the gifts were. I think a cat a comb and a pan. I thought that idea was sweet. etc'.
