What is there so psychedelic on the music from the Grateful dead. It is nothing more then some blues and folk music. Pink floyd turns me on. That is trippy but the grateful dead is just blues. Nothing wrong with blues but it isn't the trippy music that everybody talks about. Three bootlegs from the grateful dead. (don't right click and save. Left click the link and you see the download link) Grateful dead @ Fillmore east, may 15th, 1970 Grateful dead @ the John F Kennedy stadium, june 10th, 1973 grateful dead @ Dane County Coliseum, feb 15, 1973 On this site there are also several bootlegs of them playing at the acod tests.
one of the reasons LSD is associated with the Grateful Dead was because they were THE band to see when LSD became popular. The Grateful Dead became famous not only for their music, but because of the massive amounts of lucy that was brought to the shows. The musicians tripped and jammed freestyle. Things came together in a really beautiful way. I can see how you can think Pink Floyd's music sounds trippier. But the Dead didn't make thier music sound trippy- they also didn't use the technology PF did- it was just what a lot of kids who tripped listened to.
The Grateful Dead have always been associated with LSD because they played at the Acid Tests with Ken Kesey I wouldnt call their music merely "some blues and folk". they had a sound of their own, in which there was definately a psychedelic quality. not only did the lyrics often suggest this, but their music had the "spacy" psychedelic feel to it. I dont know a whole lot about The Grateful Dead, but some of their songs were outright psychedelic, namely Darkstar, Terrapin Station, and China Cat Sunflower. Im sure their live repertoire has plenty more examples in comparison to someone like Robert Johnson, who defines blues, The Grateful Dead are quite psychedelic obviously they cant be placed into a category so easily
The Grateful Dead was the house band at the Acid Tests. One of their friends, The Bear, was an acid maker. They were playing a lot when acid came out (along with Big Brother, Jefferson Airplane, to name just two of many). A lot of people in the crowd were tripping. Some of the band were tripping. So it is easy to see how they got characterized as a psychadelic band by media types and those who have a thing for labels and compartments. Their music is, as you say, a lot of blues and folk. It also has a component to it that is nothing but "Grateful Dead". Edit: Sorry about saying what you had already said, Viking. Got called away while posting.
yeah... heard 'mindbender' or 'can't come down'? those are, in my opinion, about... uh... you know... and if you wanna hear a lil "psychedelic" dead, listen to selections from 'anthem of the sun'... they can be found on the website www.archive.org, look in 67-68, maybe 69... um, try 'cryptical envelopment' or 'alligator' if your short on time... peace
in 73, the band was exploring country roots.. I'm thinking Mickey might have been on hiatus post Lenny Hart rip-off in that era, so Billy reverted to the tight but amazing single drum thang. seek a Dark Star. Hunter wrote that before science had noticed black holes.
well any good concert in a nice tripping environment...unless it's krs-one, I saw him while tripping and during his black cop i thought i was gonna get shot
You think the Grateful Dead aren't psychedelic? Wow, you must have not ever listened to them while tripping...
Yea, but early 70's dead can also be very upbeat at points like cumberland blues... hell fuckin yea man!... me and my uncle or some china cat->i know you rider... I also like the 77 tour...
