I had a bartender call off this weekend - one who is a friend of the bar manager. She's screwed us a few times, so my bar manager was going to fire her. Well it was her husband that called in saying she was sick. As it turns out, he was on a power trip and locked her in a closet in the house - this is what was told to my bar manager. So, obviously we're going to let her keep her job.

The thing is that her 18 year old daughter works for me as well and is apparently completely unaware of the situation with her mother and step dad. My bar manager said that I am not to say anything to the daughter - and that she will involve herself the best she can as a friend to this woman.

Thus far I have lived up to this and kept quiet, but every time the daughter works, I can't help but worry that perhaps this asshole will have a power trip on this girl too.

Mind you my bar manager is kind of the tough biker chick type who has been in a few abusive relationships herself and doesn't find the situation to be all that serious.

The daughter is 18.... is that age of majority where you are? If it is, you're within your rights to tell her what happened - you don't need parental consent. Were the police called? If so, THEY might be the ones to tell her... I'm not sure if they legally have to if she's the age of majority, but if she's living in their house (which you didn't say anything about) they might have to tell her, give her fair warning and whatnot. Either way, I'd say tell her. She has the right to make an informed decision about her living situation. If her step-dad is behaving like a psycho and locking her mom in a closet, she needs to know. Let us know what happens though!

I'm going to talk to my bar manager tomorrow and let her know that I am concerned for the safety of the daughter and the situation needs to be addressed.

I agree with ya. You are already involved in the situation, by knowing that this is going on. If it was me, and something happened, and I didnt do anything to try to prevent it, I would kick myself for months. I would feel responsible because I didnt try to take action and help someone in need. But thats just the person I am. Thats just my opinon.

The daugher is 18 and she is living in the same house as them? She must know something isn't right between her Mom and her step dad. Maybe not the part of him locking her Mother in the closet. WHich is horrible.

This is what I would do. I would talk to the daughter. If this guy is doing that who knows what else he is capable of. I think the Mother should be aware that her daughter knows. What is this guy teaching the daughter about men, trust, relationships? What if he really harms her Mother or her?The daughter and Mother need to talk.

It is never okay to be mentally or physically abused by anyone.

Locking somebody up is really more than just a power trip. Laws are different in all states, but in Illinois, if the victim was dragged or pushed into a room/closet and locked in, it would be considered kidnapping. If she was already in the closet and he locked the door it would be considered unlawful restraint - both are serious felonies. The victim's daughter should be encouraged to help her mother to seek safety.

    And,
This was a terrible thing for this guy to do, because the only people who should be made to stay in the closet are homosexuals.

Unfortunately, this country has given women too many rights. If my women get out of hand, a little time out in the linen closet can be a good thing!

Sometimes I wouldn't mind hiding in the linen closet but to have someone lock me in there against my will...He better sleep with one eye open.

Bitch, I never store my inflatables in the linen closet. It has proved to be a "not so ideal" location. Mom has to put laundry away in there.
