I feel you, I've been trying to find a decent chill campground in Northern New England for a while now, I'm planning a camping trip the first weekend in November. But, we have this nice little local spot we love in Monroe, CT called webb mountain, costs $5 for five people or $10 for ten people. It says no drinking and stuff to that effect but as long as it's hidden when ranger Dave goes by at like 7.00pm you're good to go... Unfortunately though, they have a season and it ends October 31st. Do you have any places locally you like to hit up? If you could let me know I'd appreciate it too!

Western MA has a lot of easy-going people and beautiful mountains. I'll check with my dad on specifics if you like.

The first campsite I think I ever went to was Sawyer's Island on Plum Island in MA. It looks like you need permission to camp there, but the website doesn't mention a price at all. Hopefully it's free.

Try the Acadia National Park area in Maine, or maybe just hang out on the Appalacian Trail and stay in the shelters. My brother was a ridgerunner there for a while, he had a blast.

I'm pretty sure the place flmkpr is referring to is called 13 Falls Camp Site, which is at the base of the mountains in the Pemigiwasett wilderness near Owls Head, and it is a hike in from the trail head on the Kangamangus Highway. 'Course this time of year, you can pretty much poach a camp site any where you want along the AT in VT/NH/ME if you're discrete, but it's cold.

I'll be up there back packing a section of the AT/LT in VT this weekend, 'gotta love time off.

Lafayette campground in franconia notch, white mtns, north of lincoln, nh.
Monadnock campground at the base of mt monadnock, jaffrey, nh.
Mohawk campground, mohawk state park, near charlemont, ma, in the berkshires.

Check out reserveamerica.com, you can reserve campgrounds online, then you're guaranteed a site when you get there, but the service costs a few bucks, so you might try and call the park directly and reserve over the phone to avoid that extra charge.

It sucks getting to a camp ground late in the day only to find it full.

There are also several in the green/white mountains along the AT/LT, but you gotta pack it in to get to them.

Acadia in Maine is definitely worth a visit. I recommend going in the off season though.

I need to check out Acadia, I just found a camp ground called Blackwoods there that looks good, maybe I'll check it out some time after labor day and before it gets too cold.

Blackwoods is where I camped. Nice area, but the sites are pretty much on top of one another, so if it's busy be prepared to know thy neighbors!

Funny story. There was a group of junior rangers or something (kids 10-15ish) that had a few sites close to me, and there was a couple of newlyweds between us. Each night the newlyweds would start bangin and this chick was really really loud! Moaning non stop for hours...

I thought it was pretty funny but those poor kids haha

Note to self: always camp as far as you can from the young couples, lol. I had an experience like that at Madison hut a few years back, a couple kids bangin' in their bunk. I'm thinking there's some class for ya, doin' the deed in a bunk house full of forty people. It was all I could do not to yell at them to stuff a sock in it. I'm there with my lady, but at least we have the decency to wait till we're alone, which is why we usually camp in a tent in a secluded spot.

We go to Maine each year, but we go inland where it's way less crowded. We've camped at Pittston Farm (where we got married), Indian Lake campground at the top of the Kennebec Gorge, and at various campgrounds below the Rippogenous Gorge of the Pennobscot, all of which are well within reach of some awesome hiking and whitewater.

There's nothing like camping along the Appalachian Trail in Maine. With exception of Katahdin it's not crowded at all, and there's so much there to explore. It's so peaceful, time just stops.

Northern Maine is nice, but if you get onto the North Woods land, you'll pay a vehicle toll and a camping fee. It ain't cheap.

If you're going to Acadia, you pretty much have to use the official National Park campgrounds, and yeah, they're a bit crowded. You might consider the Maine state campground on the mainland, Lamoine State Park. You can commute to Acadia, and it's not as cramped.

Pretty much anywhere you can figure out to camp near a road, the beer campers will use it and trash the place. That's why shelters on the Appalachian Trail are always a hike in.

One place you can drive into that's free is southern Vermont, in the Green Mountain National Forest. There's a place called The Airstrip (which it once was) near the Somerset Reservoir. On this map

    http://maps.yahoo.com/#mvt=m&lat=42.945207&lon=-72.958595&zoom=13

it's on the road running north-south, just west of the lake. And there are various other pulloffs from the same road, all with free legal camping, but no facilities.

You can camp almost anywhere on public land in southern Vermont for free, certainly anywhere accessible along the Long Trail in the Green Mountains, except the popular spots with composting toilets that employ care takers, those are like six bucks a night per person.

i highly recommend October Mountain State Park in Massachusetts... you can get a campsite for like $5 a day and they have yurts too that you can rent! YURTS!

really nice, like 10 miles of trails going up a 2000ft mountain...

next up is Mount Greylock also in Massachusetts... the highest mountain in Massachusetts it has a great view that has inspired many artists.
