Just to clarify -> "creature" includes everything from elephants to mosquitoes to mushrooms. I used to rescue dogs, but I don't do that anymore, so maybe y'all can cheer me up with your stories. Um... I rescued a spider from the refrigerator this morning. Cute little thing. Lucky, too.
I rescued my kitten from an animal hoarder. He would have otherwise been diseased, bred, and eventually eaten by coyotes or bears (the fate of most of her cats). He's happy and healthy now that I have him though.
I moved a spider out of my bed. I wanted to put it outside first but then just moved it to the other side of the room. I rarely put spiders out, and I certainly don't kill them; they're welcome to eat mosquito's & other annoying kinds of bugs all day long But I still don't like them in my bed
21 rats. Their owner died. My vet called and asked me to take them. Some have been adopted and some still to be adopted and some I am keeping.
Hmm probably a lady bug...I try to catch and release any critters that get in the house. Then there's my kitten,it's one I rescued...and one of my dogs is a rescue dog. At one time I had 20+ rescued animals with me...but now I don't have the space at the moment
I stopped my car in the middle of traffic to get out and move a turtle from the middle of the road. I think she had come up to lay her eggs. I carried her down to the nearby creekbed. People looked at me like I was crazy.
a hedgehog, i saw him on teh way back from my walk - close to my house, and gave him a drink of my water and he was so thirsty he was biting the bottle top trying to get more. He was very young and pretty skinny so i bought him home (i know it is not right to move wild animals, but where he was, was so all concrete and fences and road, and last year we found a starved hedgehog at teh same place, whom we took to a vet but was too hurt to live)..now i am feeding him left over cat food and he's in the neighbourhood running about...but he turns up to eat food, plus the gardens in this street are pretty much better than where he was, around the corner. We are thinking of taking him to a country place after winter -where there is a lot of hedges and brush and a water supply, because we will be moving soon and i don't think there is any real water supply here. Vets here don't charge to look after wildlife, which was a nice suprise.
Great stories, every one. (um, except newo... I may have to get St. Francis's ruling on that one...) Just to throw a weird one at you, once following a hurricane there was a young 30ft pine tree that was partially uprooted. My landlord called & said he was on his way with a chainsaw to clear it. I said that's bullsh!t. So I went out there by myself with a bunch of ropes and managed to rig a pulley to raise it back up. It took me all afternoon, and the landlord thought I was a complete maniac, but I'm happy to report the feisty bugger's alive today.
I rescued a praying mantis from a pub last. It was very very friendly but I don't think it was drunk.
I kind of saved a laby bird. We were gardening and it just appeared in the border So I picked it up and put somewhere safe. Otherwise my brother might have(accidentally) squished it with a trowel. We took in the rabbits of course, that was last Febuary and September.
my cat brought home a little baby bunny and i made her let it go. i kept it in a box and gave it food and water, but it's neck was broken. I was really sad for it. I had school the next day and at 4 in the morning i was awoken to his "screaming" in pain and i held him or her in my hand for almost an hour when it died. ( i didn't go to school that day) my note was kind of funny though: "Wil was absent on 4/19/05 due to greiving over the loss little bunny our cat brought home. Please excuse his absence..." hehe
my daughter rescued a tiny vole from our mouse police cat, very scared but unharmed. she opened her hand and he scurried away.
I think you did the best you could. I've had a few animals die in my hands, and I think they get some comfort out of the warmth & not dying alone. Once I was keeping a badly-injured bird in my apartment. I used to work long hours, and one day I came home late and found birdy in a terrible mess, like she'd been going crazy all day. I picked her up, and she calmed down, and 2 minutes later she was dead. ...or maybe . I dunno. Still, I prefer happy endings, like WondringAloud's vole. P.S. My rescue for today was a really freaky lookin bug I found trapped inside my window.
i rescue bugs on a daily basis im always finding some bug that has come in from outside so i just release them back out. i stopped my car to rescue a turtle from the road pretty recently and on a few occasions ive caught my cat beaker chasing mice and i've run out and made sure the mice get away with no harm done (im sure they aren't always so lucky though when i'm not around). and some time ago i rescued a homeless kitty who turned out to be preggers and about to pop any day. so those are my latest rescues......more to come!
