Well..since I started a thread about diiferent browsers...:)
there are different virus scanners as well;..
I've run on Antivir,Avast,Bitdefender,Mc.Afee,Panda and Norton before...
and now I swear that AVG 2011..the payed version,I mean...is worthwhile...
I run it together with AVG P.C tune up..
    any comments perhaps??

I use MacAffee because the University I work for provides a free license to it for its graduate students and faculty. I personally dislike it because it slows my computer down. However, it HAS been effective in keeping viruses and mal-ware from my computer. To compromise, I turn off the 'auto-scan' and anything that will effect the speed of the computer when I DON'T want MacAffee running.

Try and stick to just one main anti-virus programme with real time protection, should be suffice as long as you keep the virus definitions updated, to much software trying to protect your computer will actually slow it down.

Also alot of programmes are portable these days meaning you dont have to install them, you can scan straight from USB whatever, super anti spyware and malwarebytes are examples of these though they do come with the full instalation versions too.

Ive Used AVG since windows 7 was beta. AVG was one of the Win 7 Virus programs available for free testing with the OS. I tried Kaspersky and Trend Micro also.
I settled on AVG because its a very focused Company and integrates into a win 7 system so well.

I use my own brain as antivirus protection...

I always know everything that is going onto my computer. that's all I need. Plus, I have it set up with multiple hard drives, so I can always just do a fresh install of windows without worrying about losing anything on my storage drive.

I'm often wondering which virus scanner would come out best out of a test??
I heard very good remarks about Bitdefender...Norton Symantec should slow down a P.C..
Avast,AVG and Antivir are free virus scanners...:)
I personally think it's worthwhile to invest a few bucks in a decent scanner..:)
    I used antivir for a while(the free version)but updating was a hassle..:(
    AVG 2011 is a good scanner..I reckon I payed 40 euro's for 2 years..
it does what it is supposed to do...keep the nasties out..:2thumbsup:
of course then there is still the spam,ad aware,trojans,worms..rootkits etc...
will it ever end??there's spybot and superantispyware 5.0.1128..
to keep that under control..and they are both free..which is a positive point!!
and these trojans...can be hard to get rid off sometimes..

Ive wondered..why use the pay version when the free versions do the job.

Answer for me is, because they more fully integrate the system with useful stuff. Its not just crap that has no use bloating the program.

I'm using Kapersky at the moment. NOD32 is the best one you can buy, Mcaffe and Nortons are probably the worst next to the free ones. I strongly suggest if you have nortons or mcaffe you get rid of it as soon as possible and get something thats not a piece of shit.

I really only use malwarebytes for scanning and cleaning my computer. Works wonders.

Just yesterday I got an update for AVG 2012...
AVG has become a very popular free scanner...
but...I reckon the payed version is really worthwhile the bucks..
I use the AVG PC tune up as well..

I am ready to delete the free McAffee that I have on my computer. It makes the piece of shit that I compute with even worse. I have even disabled all automatic tasks but it still seems to mess things up.
