When exactly did rock n' roll die?

Was it somewhere around 92-93? I thought grunge was just a phase but I think now it was the death knell. The other day I kicked off my XM to listen to local stations for a bit and it was terrible. And what's this...Lance Bass is gay? What? Are you serious? WHO KNEW?????? Oh please...NOBODY cares!

I remember when MTV died but pop and top 40 are...I don't even know what that stuff is. Rap? Hip-Hop? Air brushed doppelgangers with no talent? Were the 80's the last great gasp of Rock?

I used to make fun of those guys that never quite seemed to make it out of the late 60's. Have I now become that which I loath?

 

I'd say the last gasp of Rock Greatness was Pink Floyd's "The Wall" released in November of 1979.

There were some noble efforts, but rock never really recovered.

I agree that after the Grunge Era 1991-1993/4 Rock seems to have died. But maybe rock has gone back underground in the form of Jam Bands. JMO

 

Agreed. There have been some reasonable albums after Cobain's death.. I like a couple of Oasis albums in the mid to late '90s. But yea.. that's a pretty accurate description of the life and death of rock 'n' roll. Don't bet against a reincarnation though.

Rock has not died yet, nor will it ever. It simply keeps evolving and branching off into many sub-genres. Be it oldies rock n'roll, psychedelic, hard rock, soft rock, metal, alternative, grunge, it's all rock. It simply comes in many different formats. And it's a good thing too, especially since there's a kind of rock for virtually everyone. As far as I'm concerned, no music ever "dies". It's like with shred; people were saying shred was dead for the longest time. Truth is, it never was. It's all media's deciding what kind of music is "in" at the time and what is not "cool". Media pretty much creates the illusion that a certain sound is "dead" when it is still quite alive and kicking. When rock dies is when all humans die and the history of the earthlings becomes completely forgotten.

I agree if you're speaking in terms of how Nirvana partially influenced naive, mindless kids to help make shitty rock like most mainstream emo. But Nirvana (primarily 91-94) was pure emotion.

I also agree that rock isn't dead. It is, in fact, in quite the lull. But I believe that one of the main reasons why rock went to shit is because of "punk" rock. Sure, it was political, but on a more uneducated level. Feeling diminished while conformity and fashion statements prevailed.

As Neil Young said, Hey Hey My My, Rock And Roll Will Never Die. And he is correct. It has not died. In fact, Neil himself is still putting out good rock. There are many bands still kicking out the tunes, Deep Purple, Wishbone Ash, Doobie Brothers, Ted Nugent, James Gang, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.
