When's a bowl finished?

I can never tell when the bowl is done. I usually smoke joints and when the bud is burned it just turns to ash and falls. When is the bud done in a bowl? It's as if I'm just smoking fucking black shit. If it's still together then does that mean there's still bud to smoke?

 

I pack my bowls fairly tight and when i light it, you can see the weed as it burns. i start from one side of the bowl to the other. and having a poker helps so you can scramble it around.. tapping the side of the bowl works too.. hit it till you have ashes.. it burns down or till your throat cant take it anymore.

 

well if there's nothing burning anymore then it usually means it's done... that's the way I do it.

Anyways, also, if you touch it and it just breaks like ashes (which it most likely is at this point), then it's also another indication that it's done.

 

This was kind of a dumb question because right after I posted it I poked the ash and the bud fell apart and shit so I figured it was done.

like blow/puff down straight onto it, i ashes will just fly away and all you have to do is pack down the remaining bud and smoke

 

tap your bowl a little bit to ash it kinda...
and when the ashes fall out, smoke what's left in there

also the last hits of a bowl usually taste really gross.

 

Lately, I've been smoking a bong with no screen. I draw from it until the ashes are sucked right into the water. I think it's a good method, but the water needs to be changed often.

With a waterless pipe (and with a bong, actually), I take the first toke in by holding the flame as far away from the bud as I can - while still being close enough to light it. That way, the trichomes are burnt first. The taste, and effect, are fantastic! After that, I draw off of it until it becomes difficult to light. Then, after a quick examination to determine whether there's anything left, I might stir it up a little and attempt a final toke.

Unfortunately, by the time you get to that final toke, you're getting mostly non-active vegetable matter (which isn't to say I throw it away - it's still BUD!).

I usually err on the side of caution and give it a test hit if I'm not sure if it's kicked. I'd rather get a nasty tasting hit than waste weed.

 

This whole thread is full of win. Excellent suggestions, I have a friend who -always- calls it WAY early, when there are like 15 hits still.

 

yeah man, It might help if your outside while doing this. Or after the cherry goes out, But this is what I so and get dust and ash all over the place. But its my house, So what. But I like that Idea the most, could even dig at it with stick and free up some more ash, while puff'in..

 

When it tastes like shit, ash and lighter fluid. I don't mind wasting a hit or two if it saves my taste buds from that nasty last hit. As said earlier, I start on one side of the bowl and kind of work my way around. I can usually get it to burn evenly so I only have to light it once or twice.

 

I should of mentioned Im speaking of a bong. or something you cant really tip and tap. or flip over. Unless it comes off the piece. But usually I blow at the bowl and whatever is in there thats not solid flys out, but even a solid will fly out.. You can only get a few hits from my bong now since I broke the other one, But anyways, all the other methods are cool too. Whatever works for you.

I was doing this for a while too, but I realized that some of my weed was getting sucked down into the water before it was fully burned, so I bought a glass screen and am very pleased with it.

IMO, the best way is just to watch if anything still glows down there. I've met people who think that anything useful is done before that final burn, but I've never found evidence to back that up.

Even a lighter can make a good tool to move some bud around, push off ash, and pack the remaining stuff together for easy lighting.

i ALWAYS pack it down with my lighter before i hit it, so the buds are more together which is better to smoke and you can feel it when your applying pressure

 

Yea when it comes to me and all my friends we usually just stop when it tastes like shit lol
