I was spanked on the ass with a belt or my mom's hand. I preferred the belt. I was never beaten though. I never had marks left on me. Just a sore tooshie for a few minutes and an understanding that I would get more of the same if I did something wrong again. My parents made sure I knew why I was getting in trouble.
