so what you're saying, deviate, is that if he is a "mixed breed" he isn't technically a pit bull?

At least around here "mixed breed" is code word for "pitbull, but we don't want to actually call it a pitbull"

that can happen too, but look at the dog just to begin with. his ears are standing up.

he might be classified as a 'pit bull-type dog', but he isn't an american pit bull terrier

Condeming a whole breed of dogs because of the way some of them act (especially considering you don't know how they were raised), is as bad to doing it to people based on the color of their skin.

There are some that are vicious, yes, but looking to those who raised them is a better starting place then what breed they are.

he also hasn't shown aggression to humans

    http://www.wbir.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=115986&provider=rss

People's reactions seem to go one way or another.

Bob on Facebook said, "They ought to air drop that bad boy into Afghanistan."

Brian also on Facebook said, "They better not put that dog down. You can't put a dog down for property damage if he isn't aggressive towards humans".

Brian's point brings up a few misconceptions about Winston's case and future.

"Everybody has an opinion of what should happen to Winston, what shouldn't happen to Winston or is going to happen to Winston," Walsh said. "The problem is they don't really understand Winston's case."

The pit bull mix has been deemed a potentially dangerous dog, and it seems many are afraid he will be put down. Walsh says because Winston hasn't shown aggression towards humans, that probably won't happen.

I dunno, I wanna agree with you, but then look at specific species of animals. It's undeniable that the average shark is far more vicious than the average goldfish.

From what I learned on wikipedia today, "pit bull" is a term for a wide range of breeds, and some breeds could be more violent than others.

Supporting your argument, however, the most incidences of human fatalities from pit bull types is the rottweiler - which is considered by the FCI and American Dog Kennel Club, to be of calm happy temperament.

a rottweiler is not included under the umbrella of 'pit bull'.

    a pit bull is technically:

    -an american staffordshire terrier
    -an american pit bull terrier
    -a staffordshire bull terrier
    -a bull terrier

or any combination or mixes of these dogs. what happens, though, is that any dog who remotely resembles a pit bull, is automatically classified as one.

also, when looking at something like incidences of fatalities from a dog attack, you have to look at the prevalence of these dogs in relation to other dog breeds.

See here's the thing though. Looking at stats and such can be very misleading. The popular misconceptions of these breeds of dogs, both pits and rotti's, tend to attract a certain type of owner who thinks having a 'vicious' dog would be 'cool'. Building on that misconception that is how they raise them and treat them. This skews the numbers when you look at 'how vicious a breed is'.

Think of this, which have you seen or heard of more. Vicious dogs like pits and rottis, or ones like little chihuahua's?

The pits and rottis cause more damage when they go off, but raised in a manner that doesn't encourage it, they don't seem to be any more prone to it.
