    1. Praise, 5. Blame
    2. Fame, 6. Disgrace
    3. Pleasure, 7. Pain
    4. Gain, 8. Loss

    8 Worldly Dharmas

People have been hooked on these for a looooooooooooooooooong time.

I care about what people think about me.. I don't really invest in it though.
I care enough to hear whatever it may be but ultimately..
if you think I'm a dog,
to you I will be a dog.
That does not make me a dog.

If you think I'm the greatest person ever, that doesn't make me the greatest person ever.
If you think I'm the worst person ever, that doesn't make me the worst person ever.
If everyone thinks I am a terrible person, that doesn't make me so.

Many people buy "stock" into what others think about them and when that market crashes..
their feeling of self worth diminishes.

You cannot have praise without blame.
Just as you cannot have gain without loss.
    Or any of the others.
Day does not exist without Night.

People expend so much energy chasing after those first 4 and hoping that they don't meet with 5-8.

What other people think can be helpful sometimes though in pointing out patterns of behavior in us that we ourselves were unable to see.. positive or negative.

So you dont care soooo much that you post about it on the internet? Looks like you care enough to try to get people to think a certain way about you, in this case to think that you dont care.

I care what the people who I am forced to live with and the people I work with think, but only in the most superficial way, in the sense that I would rather my life not be unbearable, so I do what I can to keep conflict to a minimum. When I move out, which will be soon, they will know that my life is my own or they can kiss my ass. I won't be a sniveling submissive forever.

I hate to admit it but you're right...at least I agree and then I don't know its so much what people think.....but maybe rather what they will do about it. Like they think your a loser or whatever and then treat you like shit. I mean I don't care if someone thinks I'm a loser druggy freak, as long as they're cool with it....but if they want to beat the shit out of me then yeah I find that a little intimidating.

One feels like this momentarily, any logical mind can be overwhelmed by the illogic of ones surroundings.

Ultimate truth, nice to see the world has not all gone to the original posters complete disregard of 40,000 years of learning what a meat shuffle like this planet is all about.

Balance is ..flowing gently in harmony with the world and its occupants, if one cannot, yet one knows one cannot and has a valid reason, then that reason must be accounted for... Or the hatred in the world as misunderstood to be the sole opposite of love (which is attained, not God given as a base truth of emergence from within) has twisted oneself to now, rather than twisting oneself forward to tommorrows hope of clarity and betterment for all.

To be incapable of love, is sometimes to know how truly flawed ones will to ones own betterment is..
To be flawed to this extent is not diminishing of oneself, for love is a creation of mind, thus it did not exist to begin with, balance has been unaltered without it's forcing into the world.

Tell me.. Can one exist unhindered as one is today? or does the world spite down your own presence?
My world will change or I will die attempting to change it.

    "You speak of love!"
A Lesser God once shouted at God.

Some caught God at it, at some point, or had this revealed to them, I did not ask to be tampered with emotionally.

That is all true on every level.

    To original poster.

Why? is a questions premise which confounds the entirety of those who still use it when all information required has been found.

The reason why people care about what other people feel goes back to an event that may seriously messed them up. I have extreme social anxiety that resulted from an upbringing of verbal aggression. I was never told that I was loved or smart. I care about what people think because I'm scared of rejection. It is hard to overcome this since I've been exposed to it all of my life, but I'm working on it.

    To the original poster:
You're lucky that you don't suffer from this, but don't judge others who are working through it.

I like when people like me. And when I respect someone it means a lot when they respect me back.

But if people don't like me or have a negative opinion of me it generally rolls off my back. fuck 'em!

It's hardwired into our psychology: when we were living in tribes our survival depended on our being accepted by the other tribe members. Being ostracized was usually a death sentence.

So, somewhere swimming around in each of our brains we still have this "my life depends on what other people think of me" instinct.

People need people. We are a social species. That doesn't mean we have to depend on others to approve of us. We are obligated to have manners, but we can have freedom of thought. Some get self-conscious about if we're different, or sometimes face too much opposition at once. It's rough. In the end though, it's our original thoughts that are so important to put out there even though it feels risky.

They care so much about it because they don't have enough confidence, their self-esteem is low, so they don't respect themselves. For example, if somebody thinks that he/she isn't clever enough, beautiful enough, talented enough and so on, they will definitely worry what other people say about them in relation to those things.
