It can't be just for the food...you can have turkey/or a roast (if u eat it) almost anytime you feel like paying the price for one...and who says you can't eat yams & pumpkin pie any other time of year. It ain't as if the grocery stores are empty 11 months of the year and we're starving till November. And if we need a holiday as an excuse to gather family & friends around the dinner table, then maybe we need new priorities.
I celebrate thanksgiving because its the one time of year my sisters and i, as well as our families, all make time for each other. sad, i know. but we all live far away from each other and my siblings are teachers, so they work most of the year except during the holidays. i get what youre saying though
It's another excuse for my family to get together and eat, drink, and play music. It's allways fun when my whole family gets together
ya really aint missin much A, least not in my opinion...all it ever was in our super big family was an excuse to get together in the name of a holiday, get drunk fight, bicker bitch and then at the end of the joyous event pick names for xmas,,, yet another wonderful holiday that does much the same as t day ceptin for addin the tensions of who got what n whose was better n what cost most least, etc... now its usually just us and maybe a few others of our phamily and generally not always, we have turkey, but thats cuz its the only time of year we can afford to buy one,,,, i refuse to raise turkeys here on the farm
i don't. but i do like turkey and bread stuffing and lots of gravey over it. and pumpking pie too. which i don't limit to any one day nor see any reason to. i do celibrate indiginous people's day and midwinter's eve, and to a lesser extent the other solstace and equanox's. to me, the rest of it, are days that other people celibrate. which is ok with me. and i certainly have nothing against anyone doing so. although i can't see celibrating the soverignty of any nation, nor the birthdays of dead politicians. i think for the most part we DO have the wrong holidays, celibrating the wrong things for the wrong reasons, and that there are a lot of other GOOD things and good reasons to be celibration totally other ones then those the dominant culture and the unthinking mainstream which sheepishly fallows it do. =^^= .../\...
I enjoy the atmosphere of Thanksgiving. I like knowing that all of the people you love are gathered together to enjoy a wonderful meal together.
I might cook a shit ton just for traditions sake but really I love the excuse to get together with family and friends and think about how fortunate we are... especially when there seem to be plenty of opportunities now a days to focus on what we don't have...
i only just found out today that yams are sweet potato. i thought they were a type of clam all this time. damn. clam. yam. bam. mam. thanksgiving doesnt exist here but my mums a new jersey native so to me thanksgiving is that day when muma makes a huge turkey and we stuff ourselves and she tries to tell us the story of the pilgrims and none of us care!
Simply to remind ourselves that a band of english exiles could invade a country, rape the locals of all thier pride, heritage, land and dreams. Killing them with thier diseases, stab them in thier backs for thier help and trust all while showing how much food can be wasted. Hmm, did I figure that one out correctly? So infact are they "Thankful" that the locals they came upon took pitty on them and assisted them in building foothold and keeping them from starving just so later they could destroy them and take everything away.
I have always hated Thanksgiving for that reason.. .but like I said, now I just use it as a chance to be thankful we need more days to remember of how lucky we are no matter how much or little we have. somebody should appoint a new day for giving thanks
I loved the episode of Northen Exposure where the locals would toss tomatos at all the white poeple on thanksgiving!
well, most people can only make time to get together on the major holidays. it's not a lack of wanting to on my part, and i'm very close to my family. but to be honest, it's mainly about getting time off work for dave.
my dad and i go do the concession stand for high school football games in the morning to early afternoon...then we come home to dinner, eat, visit grandma and eat more, football, eat, football, pie mmmm pie is the best
We don't do the pilgrim thing, for us it is a day to be thankful for all that we have. Sometimes people need a designated day to remind them to count their blessings, otherwise it might never get done in the hustle and bustle of life... If every day were special, none of them would be.
