Why do young people always post pictures of themselves online?

I don't understand it. It's like everyone under the age of about 25 nowadays has pictures of themselves all over the net. They've got these really practiced poses down-- there's the goofy face, the 'I have attitude' face, the boyfriend/girlfriend shot, etc., etc...

Seriously... WHY do you want total strangers to look at you??? Does it make you feel like a star? Are you so desperate to be evaluated? Is it your youthful insecurities? What is it??

i think i know what face hes talking about.. although i wouldnt describe it as an ' i have an attitude face'... its like that face that all the young girls around my age do where they kind of push out their lips... almost like when you poke out your lips to kiss somone... but thats not quite what they are doing... yess... many ppl are very posy and unnatural with their pics... ppl my age it seems anyway. i dont really care much one way or the other tho.

So the people I interact with know what they're talking to.

All of the above reasons aside, ALL youth with photos online are desperate, pathetic creatures, eagerly seeking the acceptance of creepy old men.

Strangers look at you when you're outside, but there's a difference between having a face (which you can't really do much about) and taking a picture of yourself and putting it on the internet along with some obviously attention-seeking comment like 'I'm so sexy... LOL'. One involves just being alive, and one involves self-advertising.

However it's definitely interesting that it's mostly girls who have responded here...

I'm not sure. Maybe because everyone else is doing it they do it. Or maybe it's to spread happiness. All I know is, I deleted my facebook account.

Haha, good thread. I have wodered the same thing for awhile lol. My ex girlfriend did this like it was her job and she could never give me a concrete explanation for it. It's never really bothered me, I just find it odd I guess. I have always assumed it's just insecurity...people fishing for compliments and such. Ha, it's not bad but some people take it ridiculously too far.

I have myspace and facebook friends with well over 1,000 pictures of themselves (Mostly female, but guys too). Typically posing in the exact same position or in front of a mirror with their face all contorted like they just got slapped in the face with a dick. I find it hillarious.

    ^^^Exactly.

Each pose is designed to make the person doing it appear to have a fun and exciting life... but how could you possibly have a fun and exciting life when you spend most of your time either on Facebook or taking pictures of yourself for Facebook?

It's like this site has become one of the only reasons some people do anything at all-- to impress other people they only barely know, all using Facebook.

But I suppose everyone has that part of themselves that wants cred for doing/wearing/buying something cool. I'd say the doing makes sense... not the wearing or buying, because then all you can really say is 'hey... look at how rich I am/my parents are... I just bought a new fucking hat!'

Even with something that genuinely is exciting, like traveling or extreme sports or whatever, I can't imagine the experience itself at least holding any real excitement for you if while you're doing it all you can think about is putting the pictures on Facebook.

I didn't think I would turn into some old coot unhappy with the way things are so quickly... but seriously, this whole online thing is a little unnerving.

Because they aren't so goddamn insecure and threatened by technology as you?
Or is that you being hypocritical in the picture on your profile?

It seems to me like your little rant isn't about young people posting pictures online at all, just the attention whoring ones, you over-generalizing grampa =)

Hmmmm.... well, I suppose I am sort of threatened by technology, but I don't think that this is so unhealthy... definitely not as unhealthy as embracing it wholeheartedly without thinking about what it might be doing to you.

Also, this may surprise you, but that person in my profile picture isn't really me... I don't own a spaceship that can fly past the moon, in fact, I've never even been on a spaceship that can fly past the moon... and I haven't visited any space stations either. Also, to clear up the confusion, I am not the actor who portrayed Dr. Heywood Floyd in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. I am yet another anonymous human who chose a way to identify himself on the Internet without giving away too many details of my personal life... something I am not inclined to do.

But seriously, how many people do you know under the age of 25 who don't tend to post heaps of pictures of themselves online???

I am a 21 yr old that does have pictures of myself posted. Not typically trying to pose in any way because like some others have already stated does tend to look too thought out and intentional. I can say maybe a few reasons as to why I have done it and NOT over obsessively.. Sometimes while being involved in sites such as this one you find people you really have a connection with as well as making new friends. Maybe not everyone, but sometimes when you get well acquainted with someone it is nice to have a face to go along with the personality. Also curiousity is a natural occuring thing and from time to time I like to look up old friends from school or people I havent talked to in a while. The pictures kind of give you a sense as to where they are in their lives at the moment, the journey they've traveled and how they have changed. Although I agree with the fact that the posy pictures.. especially with the 'Im just too cute" comments are irrelavant and very uninteresting to look at.

Thats my opinion on the matter any way and I do find it demeaning when women as well as some men, put half nude pics of themselves standing behind the mirror online. On the other hand though.. it can be done in a tasteful artsy kind of way and is shared as just that.. art!

Personally I like knowing what people look like so no it's not annoying, I just don't do it because I like being able to talk about anything and not worry about people knowing who I am. I have done it before a few people know what I look like but I feel comfortable the way it is now.
