He's only been doing it the past couple weeks. Everytime I take him out he'll gorge on grass. Could it be a vitamin definciency or something like that?

We have 6 dogs and some of the time they will go outside and graze on grass like a herd of cows. It is my understanding that they do this to get certain vitamins or fiber that their dog food may not have. It is normal behavior, according to our vet.

Dogs do graze on different types of grass, the grass they normally go for is a long grass and its quite a thick grass, its not your normal garden stuff.
They sometimes eat grass when they want to puke, but sometimes they just do it because they feel like it HTH

What's weird though, is that he's 11 and he's never eaten grass before at all. Maybe I should start introducing some veggies into his regular diet?

haha, my pooch looked like a little cow they way she grazed. :)
well eavesdrop, he's getting older. when dogs get older they lose certain vitimans. that's probably why he's doing it. as long as you don't spray your grass with something harmful, i wouldn't worry about it. it's a dog thing :)

Yeah, my dog eats grass and sticks. Then she throws it up. She continues to do it, though--all the time.

    Real mature...

Anyway, you're very wrong, Sir Helixxx. Some people do, in fact, prefer not to feed their dogs "dog food". I keep kibble readily available for him all the time, but my little one gets mostly real food - raw beef, anything else cooked (pork, poultry and wild meat), and all kinds of fruit, veggies, rice, bread, etc. Pretty much the only things I won't share with him are things that are bad for dogs.

This said, he still goes out and munches on grass sometimes. My cats do it, too. Animals know what they need to survive, same reason humans get cravings for certain meats or veggies, because they're lacking something in their diet.

bread dough is unhealthy for dogs.. many fruits can also be poisonous to dogs
sure i still feed my dog that kinda shit cause i tend to forget, but acting like it's healthy and you're doing better for your dog is silly...

and honestly, why make a comment if what i said didn't concern you at all? the other poster began with the name calling, i have just as much a right to be a prick if she is gonna be a bitch for no reason

I'm not a bitch but you may call me one if you like, makes no difference to me, but, you made fun of vegetarians and your total show of ignorance had it coming. I never insulted anyone on here before, but I felt the need to do it on that one... for real. Your post was ignorant. Dog Food? hee hee poo poo pee pee. come on. Do you really think thats all they eat? what we give them out of bags? they've existed longer than our human help could offer, and sometimes more wisdom is needed than the facotry farms offer.

Yes I could of been the better person and just informed you, but I just couldnt help it. You were asking for it, making fun of vegetarians, and yes you misspelled that.

The other suggestions have been good so far. Another possibility, and something that my dog has recently experienced, is having something caught in it's throat. My dog had a foxtail (weed) caught in the corner of her throat a few weeks ago, and ate as much grass as she could until it wedged itself out.

Making fun of vegetarians? He was talking about veterinarians, which he spelled perfectly might I add.

My theory is that he cant smoke grass because he cant really hold a bong/roll a joint/ light a lighter so in a desperate attempt to get high he eats it.

I've read that grass cures stomach pains and that dogs will eat grass if their stomachs are bothering them. I'm just saying that I've read that before.

My dog eats grass all the time when we're outside, but I know that, in her case, it's just because she's kind of weird like that.
