This is really a question for the psychological thinkers out there. I was just thinking about the female psychology of the mind and why it is that on forums like these (or other places) where they need to create a user/nick name, they almost always add something to identify them as being female?

For example, it's very common that girls will put the word "girl" or some form or variation in their username, ei: Flowergirl, Babygirl, Calgirl, etc. I find this interesting because you never see guys doing this. You never see Flightman, or Racerboy, or Ballerboy, etc.

To me, this is about a deeper psychological thing with females feeling the need to identify themselves as being female in our societies/communities. Perhaps it arises from being in a male dominant society? I don't know. But I'm curious to hear what others think about this.

I've been gaming/internetting for a while now and I come from the days of 'There are no such thing as a girl on the internet" And from personal experience, I can say that the internet will always assume you are male until you tell them otherwise.

There's still some of that around. Some people don't like their gender being mistaken.

Not saying it never happens. But it's extremely rare in comparison to the female usernames.

Valid points. But again, if you're name begins with Daisy or Baby, you really don't need to add "girl" to the end of it for people to realize that you're likely a girl ;)

    Maybe now a days.

But for a very long time I used the alias SithInHeels.

It was amazing how many people thought I was male. It was easier for them to picture a Sith Lord in Drag, than it was to picture a female on the internet that liked Star Wars.

Also, some people use gender in their names to try and fool people. Not all flowergiirrrl14s are girls. Some are 45 year old fat men in their basements. And some Manservants are 40 year old drag Kings. :D

Lol, true. But I'm talking about the real girls who do this, not the female impersonators.

And the simple fact that you had "heels" in your username would've been enough for me to suggest that you were female. I've never seen a Star Wars drag queen, but then again I'm not a Star Wars follower.

Interesting that your username now doesn't give off that strong of a female element. You're correct in that I would've assumed you were either male (or a gay male) had you not said anything about your gender.

But the bigger question in all of this is why did you (or does one) as a woman feel the need to come out and identify themselves as such on the internet? Why not just pick a standard non-gender specific name and let people assume what they want? There is also a gender display option on forums, so why not just use that instead of a female additive in the username?

That's a good reason, but can we go deeper than that? Why? Why do they want to be seen and treated as ladies on an internet forum? Particularly when most men will just see it as a free opportunity to flirt with them

I wonder why you feel the need to have an avatar with a large firearm and a pic of a guy with no shirt on?
Your posts are very manly, why do you feel the need to reinforce the fact

    Maybe this is one answer.

Women like attention. They aren't Likely to receive any if they are thought of as just another dude on the net.

Yet it's still another form of a female identifier. Maybe you selected it subconsciously. Maybe it was just pure coincidence. But you did it none the less. Perhaps it's more deep rooted than you think?

I chose the avatar with the gun because I thought the other avatars SUCKED. And since I couldn't upload my own photo as my avatar, I put it in my sig. And if my body wasn't built the way it is, no one would be making such a fuss about that pic. Babyjay has a rather suggestive pic in her sig and I never hear anyone making a fuss about that ;)

I couldn't really care less, I'd rather have a different username...something like BigDaddy ;). I am not a girly kind of person anyway, MamaPeace makes me seem like a little hippie but in reality (although I have those values) I dress in all black, wear studs and chains and clothes will skulls on and listen to deathmetal and screamo. Its all perception, you can percieve 'BabyDaisyGirl' to be a flowery ballerina chick when in reality she could be a bodybuilder. Its a username at the end of the day, many women don't have obviously women screenames

    Piaf
    Wyldwynd
    GoofyGoober
    Dragonvine
    Roamy
