A lot of people deny god's existance because they see horrible things in their world and cannot understand how God could allow this to happen if he was real. Other people who do believe in God generally hold onto their convictions under the assumption that God is watching earth and judging us. It is a very significant aspect of religion's gods that they have a judgement of us. Now let us consider the primary means by which intelligent people believe in god in the first place? It is the order contained in the world, the amazing intricate order that could seemingly not occur by chance. We can see that this has nothing to do with any of gods motives other than for structures and processes to occur in the world. The order of nature in fact is balanced only through death and destruction, in most cases. I dont quite understand, after considering this, why there is not a worldwide religion that tries to understand the world as if it was designed intelligently by an omnipotent god, without at any point suggesting that God was interacting or even watching over us. I mean, God, being allknowing and omnipotent, would not care at all about what goes on in this world. God would not be influenced at all by our actions, but most people who believe in god think that they can negotiate with god by doing one thing or another (being good, or sinning, etc). A perfect being would have no place in this imperfect world, and it even seems like an insult to god to suggest that he/she/it is caught up in the actions of men. I dont really follow the belief in a God. However, I cannot deny that evolution is a loose theory, and I to a certain point have faith in evolution. It is not proved in any way, to generate new species. So I must consider Intelligent Design seriously. But it seems that people who study intelligent design go on to have all these other beliefs about what this designer is. What sort of god would create humans just to praise him? sounds more like a child than an allpowerful being.
I think most religions are anthropocentric by necessity. It is there key marketing appeal. "What sort of god would create humans just to praise him? sounds more like a child than an allpowerful being." A very need child indeed.
Well, to be honest, the arguments for and against an uncaring god, rather than a caring one, would be totally different. If we don't imagine a god that bothers much with humanity, then there's no real reason to assume one exists at all.
It's a nice thought. If Christians can imagine a world full of millions of species created purely for the benefit of one of those species, shouldn't a serious speculator on the nature of god imagine that the world could have been created for, say, spiders, and that we're just here as a component of their ecosystem?
Evolution is not a theory nor does is it a belief system; it does not require your faith. Evolution is the change of allele frequencies in a population over time. This happens through selection pressures and genetic mutations (very few genetic mutations are beneficial) over a long period of time. The environment, both abiotic and biotic, plays a significant role in what traits are selected for and what are not. Heres a nice example of evolution: It's only 6 minutes long. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xlkj-NoZyn0 Please watch, as it is quite enjoyable.
I agree, I do not think many of the theists are really serious speculators on the nature of their sky daddy, pardon the expression. If they were we would probably have allot more unbelief around. Most of it is taken on faith I think. When there is thinking or reasoning by the faithful on this it is usually in the service of dismissing somebody else's God or Gods. I recently heard reports that Sarah Palin once made comments suggesting that humans and dinosaurs co-existed at some piont. You have to love it don't you.
\ thanks, but I understand evolution completely. And evolution has never been shown to produce new species, even though it is theoretically sound. As I said, I have faith that evolution has occurred, and this is largely based on my experience of thinking about evolution. But I say this from a perspective that has totally come to grips with the principles of evolution. It makes sense, and removes doubt. But that does not make it true. Once again, no one has ever seen or experienced evolution. Regardless of whether it makes perfect sense or not
ps. I checked out that youtube, and I find it insulting that you would use that as an example for your point. What are you trying to show? Obviously evolution can be used to explain things. But that youtube gave no reason at all to think of evolution as anything other than a theory
The trouble is in the balancing act. Going with the intellectual appraoch to God, and the whole hearted approach to God. I find that the more I am around to learn, the more I realize how little can be known about God. Does God care? Does God not care? The argument is thousands of years old, you have the Impersonal and the Personal. Some mix both and say they are two emanations of God and that it is the Personal which is the most difficult to realize. The reality is that we can not *know* God because just as the universe is designed, it was made to be explored and baffle us with mystery forever. If God is transcendental to creation, how much can we really claim to know in order to make an opinion that God cares or does not care about what goes on here? Intelligent Design is sort of misleading as well, because it implies something that most believe is not the case. But of course, Intelligent Design was named as such for the inellectuals who teach be able to admit that they dont really know how anything came about. It is consciousness which most of the more lofty spiritual teachings claim is the part of God which created, and consciousness is not intelligence. Consciousness is awareness, and perfect Awareness is to be attributed to any sort of link we can have with God using our brain. So far intelligence has provided us with more questions than answers, and it is those who love who have the air about them of a truth we can never have when we try to comprehend reality in any totality.
Evolution? What's evoltuion? Does God care, if not for the scientists; God does not care for the scientists who believes in evolution; that is why the 'theory definition' view is inadequate? He believes in the scientist who makes a lot of money out of evoltution, or the scientist who gets cheated out of a good life because of evolution.
It is the change of allele frequencies in a population over time. Definition of an allele: One of the variant forms of a gene at a particular locus, or location, on a chromosome. Different alleles produce variation in inherited phenotypes. Definition of phenotype: The observable traits or characteristics of an organism, for example hair color, weight, or the presence or absence of a disease. Supposing there was a god, how would you know this information?
You find it insulting because you have to know a little bit about evolution. Insulted that you weren't spoon feed all the information...that you had to think. Here I'll do it for you: The snakes resistance to toxins are becoming more robust resulting in high potency selection in salamanders and high Resistance in snakes. How? Evolution. Snakes eat newt. Snakes with a low tolerance are killed from toxin. Low tolerance genes are depleted from gene pool as they no longer can mate and pass low tolerance genes over time. Snakes that eat newt and live pass on high tolerance genes to next generation. The population over time because robust to toxin. (because the posses robost genes already). Selection pressures for high toxicity in newts are a result of predation from snakes. Newts with low toxin die out along with their genes. newts with higher concentrations of toxin have a higher survival rate and pass high concentrations genes to next generation. It's a evolutionary arms race. Get it? THink about this: Why is snake venom so toxic that a fraction of a drop could kill many adult humans? Why so strong?
lol.. right you read the textbook. I was insulted, as I sort of am now, by the way that you act as if you are saying anything at all about the theory of evolution. You are just repeating the basic mechanism set forth by evolutionary theory. Stop being such a blind fundamentalist. No one has ever seen this happen. So how can it be anything more than a theory? The christian can just come along and say that God created the newt and snake in this way to co-exist. And both theories simply have different premises - God or no god - and we have faith that god does not exist, just as some people have faith that he does exist. god/creator/some intelligent designer, ie once again, I have faith in evolution
Yes I have read text books before. What book are you referring to? And what is this basic mechanism? I would like to know. Evolution does not set forth mechanisms. Do you even know what you're saying? I don't. You're right. Evolution is a very slow process. It's not magic, rather, a process. How would YOU explain the incredible biodiversity on this planet? I'm very interested.
