wasn't aware that it was. little while back, i got free dvd's of just about every up-to-date flavor of linux that was available. didn't even have to pay S&H
UNIX is expensive because, umm because it is? Linux is free though and it's quite similar and theres always free bsd and the like, QNX also I believe is free, at least some version of it...
If you are looking for a good UNIX clone, check out OpenBSD. You can read about all the distributions at http://distrowatch.com. I run OpenBSD for my firewall, and a regular XP system behind that. The OpenBSD system has one of the best firewalls I have ever encountered.
Thanks! But I'm just curious...why's that little devil so expensive? Does it have something special that unix-like (minix, linux, bsd, all that other stuff...) don't have? I know BSD is a true Unix clone, licensed by Unix too.
WHy would I want Unix or Linux? Just curious. I just got windows XP professional on my puter and about all I do is homework and chat and forums on the internet. Windows seems fine to me. (Curious)
Actual Official UNIXes are extremely stable and proven etc etc... or something like that... As to why not use windows, it's evil like Trotsky311 said, and it's crappy, at least for the kind of crap I do it's not very stable... but then I've managed to crash every OS I've used, linux being the most infrequently crashed...
Officail UNIX is made by corporations, and probally the only reason it still surrivers is due to government contracts, as a corporation it can be liable and offer warranites and stuff....most 'home users' dont use UNIX, they use some onther *nix; the differances are minor, and major, depending on your vantage point, but RedHat or OpenBSD are my top votes.
Personally I run a bunch of different distros of Linux, and I also have one FreeBSD machine. I would say that Unix is so expensive because quit frankly it can be, Microsoft has to of yet come up with anything that has the level of security, network architecture, and pure elegance of operation, of Unix. As far as why should some one switch over to using Linux if they are a Microsoft person, well as someone mentioned they have XP pro, and only use their computer for school work and surfing the net. So I take this to mean they have not only bought XP pro, but also MS Office, so I am thinking you have about $300 bucks wrapped up in software to not really do that much. On Linux I can not only install an OS that is in my opinion, is far more powerful than Windows, but also all the software one would expect on a normal computer, (word processor, spreadsheet, graphics editor, etc..) for free. Not only this but because your dealing with an OS made by normal people, as apposed to a massive corporation, your ability to get problems fixed is in my opinion much quicker. I have personally seen a guy that was having a problem with a printer driver, put out a help message on a Linux forum, and by the next day someone had (hand coded) a driver for him.
unix is so expensive just cause it gots all that corporate backing. it was made by.. one of them phone companies long ago, either bell or at&t (but they're prob the same). it's just a proven system, out for a long time, and stable enough to run it constantly for years without problem. then came that guy linus who thought "man this sucks why's this shit so expensive" so he cloned it.. same thing.. different name.. different price, got it?
Unix is expensive because: 1. It's not windows 2. And it's better then windows 3. Because it's what Linux was made off and Linux is also better then Windows 4. Because most homes run Mac/Windows/ sometimes Linux; Unix is coperation usage. 5. It's what HUGE web servers use...unless their dumb and use windows 6. Unix is, well better.
Read recently that Solaris is going open source... seems like an interesting move by Sun specially in light of all the recent SCO/Linux bollox.
Hey thanks!! I've always wondered that... Nope...hate to burst your bubble (MUAHAHAHA!!!!), but Linux wasn't the first to clone Unix. In fact, there's this other company called Minix (freewear..I believe...) that jumped in before Linux, afterwards inspiring Linux to do the same thing. But Linux isn't a true clone either, it still runs with GNU (pronounced:Guh-Nu), BSD, then again, is a totally different thing. BSD's a true Unix...from what I've heard... Unix was developed by At&T. But still, why do some people prefer Unix over Linux? I heard Linux is just a cross-over between Microsoft and Unix...does it make a big difference???
nono Minix was created by andrew Tanenbaum (lol) Here's a link about minix for those who never heard of it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minix I think you're right with the AT&T and Onebell (or whatever the name is...)
Cause UNIX is used for huge databases and mainframe servers etc. It's desinged to be purchased by large corporations. Same idea as windows datacenter...
hehe, I've stayed away from linux in recent days, well recent meaning I stopped using it 2 or 3 years ago. well if you wanna get technical I use bsd, but not willingly, it's mac os... I stay away from the terminal crap, I feel too nerdy when I do all the command garbage I don't see why people use linux cept for people who pick it cause it's free or cause it's "somethin different" if you know what I mean. like say when usb came out, whenever that was, I remember it was available in windows 95 operating system release two, along with fat32. well when I got me a usb mouse I had to recompile my entire kernel, which kinda threw me off linux, if you want anything, you have a certain make, a certain architecture, and you have to compile just about everything to make it work... I didn't like an all day project just to use a simple mouse... aww shit phil collins is on the radio lemme turn it off :\
