Does anyone know were I could buy a good windmill to generate small amounts of electricity? I mostly need something to drive an electric well pump, or failing that, I could possibly use it to drive one of the old style mechanical water pumps. I would also like to try powering a single electric light with wind power. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
I don't know where you could get one personally, but I remember reading this article abour personal windmills a little while ago: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12321430/site/newsweek/ Maybe you could contact the writer...I'm sure they would know.
Thanks gandiwars. That was pretty informative. I didn't find any method of contacting the writer, though.
In a booklet How To Build A High Voltage Power Plant and Welding Unit from a small desktop publishing company in Sydney, NSW called Trendline Publishing Co. 85 Delange Rd Putney 2112 (02) 9809 1434 The book has a section on how to build a wind generator using simple tools rather than a traditional windmill that is far more technically involved. The book is 23 A4 pages but written concisely and packed with information on such matters as lead acid battery rejuvenation. I have tried it out and it did work There is an emphasis on using recycled parts so to keep costs down. If I remember the booklet cost Aus$9 a few years ago. To contact you should phone up but remember Sydney is currently 9 hours ahead of GMT. They also do some other books such as how to make a heater that runs off sump oil.
i saw a magazine called popular science just a few weeks ago that had a whole article talking about these new windmills you can buy for your houses. when i get to my house ill find the article and if it says where you can buy one ill tell you.
Check these forums, might help or you may find help there: http://www.homesteadingtoday.com/showthread.php?t=144024 http://library.thinkquest.org/C004471/tep/en/traditional_energy/wind_power.html http://www.electricityforum.com/ http://www.sierraclub.org/powerlunch/topic6.asp Peace, poor_old_dad
Thanks, guys. alot of useful information has been posted here. I look forward to looking through all of it.
sierra solar systems, they carry wind and water generating systems and components and system intigration components, energy storage and books, the whole nine yards. i believe the're located in the alternative building center in the brunswick basin between grass valley and nevada city in (northern) california, but i'm sure there must be similar places in other regeons throughout the world. they used to be at sierrasolar.com. i don't know if they still are or not. you ought to be able to google them up if they aren't. like i say, not only do they have all the hardware, they've got a zillion books to teach you how it all works and how to put it all togather. =^^= .../\...
If you have not bought yet bought a windmill, I suggest you consider buying a quiet one or, better still, try solar panels.
