Have you tried one? What do you think? Is glass better (probably) or is wood worth trying? I'm starting to carve wood and dont want to waste my time making a pipe if it doesnt smoke well. Any advantages or disadvantages?
well my glass pipe is probably nicer to smoke outof... but i recently whittled a wood pipe and i love the hell out of it... it has that 'i made this out of some sticks' factor going for it that glass just doesnt have.
Glass is they way to go. Wood hits are a lot harsher then glass. Plus glass just tastes so much better. If you wanna make a wood pipe, you should. Keep as a travel piece or something, but don't use it regularly
couple advantages of wood are that it doesnt seem to clog n get to the point of needing to be cleaned everyother time its used like glass tends to.. wood is alot easier to carry n not worry about busting,,, and if you ever have to fling it to keep from gettin busted it blends in a whole lot better with surroundings generally...
good points dilli. i agree. i carved my first few pipes outa wood and they are still around today... many of my glass pipes have shattered over the years.
I heard there's certain types of wood that aren't good for you to toke out of. I don't really know these, but if you don't know, maybe you should look them up or something (Or maybe someone here will know). But as for carving your pipe. I'd say go for it anyway just to have a piece that you made yourself cause that'd be cool. I'd really enjoy toking out of a piece I made anyway, hehe.
Wood is much more durable than glass. It's the ideal material to take the rigors of travel. I always keep a spare wood pipe in my backpack. You should use a dense wood like briarwood (what tobacco pipes are usually carved from). Other dense woods are manzanita, oak, madrone and cherrywood. To smoke properly, a wood pipe needs to be cured i.e. slow-dried (prevents cracking). Then to smoke cool, a "char" has to be built up inside. This prevents a unpleasant "smoldering wood" taste. Other materials smoking pipes have been made of: meerschaum, bone, clay, ceramic and even the lowly corncob.
ive been wanting to make a pipe from a bone for so long... i just cant seem to figure out where i would find one...
I smoked out of a wood pipe (along with joints, bongs, ect.) for over 25 years. I started using a glass pipe regularly 8 years ago. I now refuse to smoke out of a wood pipe due that I can taste the wood. Even if someone passes me their filled wooden pipe, I skip it. And with all the great tasting weed in Amsterdam, why would I have it also taste of wood?
