it seems like there are many different interpretations of these words and what genres or sounds they fit under. it all just seems up in the air pretty much.

    how would define them?

i've always thought electro was EDM, meaning electro house, house, techno, trance, drum n bass, jungle, etc; electronica is electronic music that isn't EDM, now found in indie-like bands, nu disco, trip-hop, downtempo, ambient, glitch-hop, etc.; and the word "techno" can be used in place of "electro" as a general term, or the more specific genre itself inside EDM.

i read a wiki article just now about "electronica", but i found that wiki isn't a very good site for electronic music in general after reading up on the different genres of house.

so if i'm wrong or even way off, yeah feel free to correct me.

EDM (Electronic Dance Music) is my all inclusive term

I'm like in the middle because Im not so elitist I feel the need to correct someone using a wrong term but I've heard some people mislabeling a group terribly by the wrong subgenre so I understand some of the elite/snobs frustration.

I think alot of it really depends on when you come into the edm music/scene. I was listening to electronic music before 'electro house' got popular so I've never used electro as an all inclusive term. Techno is probably the only one I've used to generalize.
This girl was calling Infected Mushroom dubstep though and I debated on jumping head first through the glass window in front of me.

Electronica could apply to non dancefloor electronic music.

yeah a lot has to do when you come into the scene. like "electro" before this decade was a specific genre completely different than what its considered today.

i think it has a lot to do with what genre you listened to first.. like the first "techno" music i ever heard was techno, so i always called "techno" music techno and just generalized it all.

but like if i wouldve heard electro or something else first i probably would generalize it as electro

What happens if you heard electro and someone said it was techno?

Techno technically is a specific sound and its popularity was mainly in the early 90's.

    EXACTLY.

EDM refers to all genres of electronic music.

As far as Techno is concerned... It's in it's own genre. Techno has nothing to do with Trance or any of the other edm genres.
    Ex:
Techno... Detroit Techno... Acid Techno... Ghetto-Tech... Minimal Techno, etc.

not for me. its like a tree.. Techno, then breaks into trance electro house all that and another techno.. because techno falls under techno for me lmao, then techno breaks down into acid techno and all that you said. idk. its my own genre with genres in it.

i'd use the word "techno" as a general term for people that dont know the scene or arent interested, like if i was talking to my mom or my grandma. cuz to them its all oonce-oonce-oonce-oonce haha

but for someone that would know, i say electro for EDM. and at that point if i started talking about techno it'd be the specific genre. and you can get more specific with the genre then even the sub-genre.
but EDM isn't all electronic music.

Im curious as to what the first 'techno' you listened to was...

See djomalley that kind of intense dissection of the subgenres is where I don't care or attempt to venture. It makes it more difficult sometimes to label a group when many of them eventually spin a different genre then when they started. Also its weird that like some genres of progressive house for instance I hear sound closer to trance then house.

    HAHA soooooooo true!

Progressive House these days is a way for Trance dj's to play trance without being written off as a douchebag trance dj.

electronic genres change soooo fast... electro can be synth rock stuff like la roux or late of the pier, but i think they reclassed that as nu-rave now. electro house is what most people would class as electro atm, and techno is more serious, vibey stuff. techno and house were very different in the 80s, and i think techno is experiencing a revival in the form of tech house.

electronic music = music produced on computers.
    electronica = genreless electronic music.
edm and techno are words used almost exclusively by americans as blanket terms for electronic music and imo show you as being someone who doesn't really know much about the subject.
