Well, im in a bit of a dilemma. You see, i work at a large retail chain store, and i have worked their for over a year and have met a lot of really interesting people of all different races and age. From many different countries as well. When i first started I had this really good manager who was really nice ad treated us all very well. But she transferred to another store after about 5 or 6 months. So for about 3 months we didnt have a manager in my department and about 2 months ago we got a new one. She is a 22 year old who thinks shes hot shit. She treats most of us like crap and barely gives out any hours. So I talked to my old manager at the store she transferred to and she said i could transfer to that one if I wanted to and get more hours and she would hire me right away. I pretty much told her i would do it but now idk if i want to because i will miss the people at my store to much. Idk what to do. i mean I need the money but i dont wanna have to start over again somewhere :(
    anyone have experiences like this?

Yeah go for it! Nasty managers don't tend to get any better and a great boss makes any job awesome. I think your gut instinct was to do it so do it :p

Is there anything else you could do, like go to the boss boss and say something about your manager? It's not the nicest thing to do but could help the people in your department too.. How is she not giving anyone hours?

The manager of the entire store is a giant pussy and doesnt do shit about anything. Theres this number we can call to complain about her, and atleast 1 or 2 people have already called but idk if they do anything. And idk about the hours, they have hired so many new people and she just doesnt like me i guess.. I've gotten into a few arguements with her and what not.

Is this a job or a career? If you plan on making a career with this chain then no doubt you should move. A 22 y/o who is in love with their own "power" is not worth wasting time with. Sounds like this one is too young and too dumb to be in the position BUT she is and you're screwed if you stay there. The friends you've made will be hard to leave, no doubt but the bottom line is you need to take care of you first.
If its just a job then learn how to go around people like her. Use the call in number and encourage others to do the same. If she finds out and fires you screw it, it's just a job and you can get another one. Just my thoughts on it.

    Good Luck

    rOllinstoned,

I don't usually recommend this, but sounds like you need to move quickly to get under the wings of your former manager.
After Christmas and a few days of store returns, there will be even less work and they will start looking for folks to lay off.

I could get all idealistic on you and say that we are supposed to figure out how to be one big happy family, but if you are already at the point where she has a low opinion of you, it would take a whole lot to turn her around to a positive outlook.

You've got the right idea, go party with your old friends once in a while, but move on to stay out of trouble.

Stay away from the old work place, lotta bad mojo there and since you would be working for another branch of the same company, you could get a right up for "disrupting the work place". Get a few phone numbers, text addresses, and stay in touch that way.

Yea it's just a job not a career. I would stay for sure if I got decent hours but i dont. and I need as much money as i can get to pay a few bills and what not. And she cant fire me for calling that number lol. I've been their for over a year and they never fire people, one of my friends who works their has called in "sick" 5 times in a month before and shows up late like once a week lol. You could probably get caught smoking heroin here and they wouldnt fire you :D
Im gonna go talk to the manager at the other store tomorwo I think. Idk though

Retail is hard to beat when you are trying to work around college or trade school classes, but as Brad says, most of us move on to other things.

Kind of depends on what you enjoy doing. If you can take what you learned about retail and get into some kind of commission sales, you could make some money.

Some people working retail can use their insider position to get a job at the corporate office of their company. Better hours and better working conditions most likely!

But unless you have an immediate offer in either of these situations and have the skills, the first thing I'd do is get back to work under that boss who likes you and would give you a good reference later on.
