would bud from a male plant smell?

bought some weed of a mate and he said it was home grown and it looked good etc. but i took it home and it has no smell. Havent had time to smoke it yet but if it has no smell does that mean it is male plant. It definately looks like weed (big clumps with buds etc.). Can it be anything else?
Can someone please help me out?

yeah no i realised after i wrote it they didnt but was too lazy to change it. it sorta was the thread topic but shouldnt have been.
im told growing plants in horse manure based soil neutralises the smell.
does that sound like bs to anyone else

sometimes weed just doesn't smell. i had some pretty good stuff a week or so that had no smell at all. smoke it and see.
