I have straight hair, ideally (meaning what I plan on, rather than at least or at most) shower once a week, and don't use any form of soap or shampoo. I would not be willing to put anything (salt, lemon juice, anything) in my hair.

It you don't use any form of shampoo or soap I'm assuming that the oil would build up and junk from the world would just make you have really bad scalp problems. I made my dreads and wash them once a week (but shower more often than that) with non residue shampoo.

But for the neglect method you still need to wash, but I'm assuming you just quit combing. I'm no expert, but I'm sure going completely without soap or shampoo would just make a mess, and not dreads.

You can shower more than once a week. Infact please do. Water isnt goin to hinder your knotting. What u need to avoid is running your fingers through ya hair. just let the water do its thing. From what i hear, for some people washing they hair alot even helped the process. U need residue free shampoo with no conditioner n all those chemicals. etc.

Or u can just shower normaly n not wash your hair for the first coulple weeks. which ever u like.

i think it would. i dont know anyone who doesnt use soap, but if your hair and scalp are used to it now, i see no reason why dreads would be any different. i assume you have your own reasons for not using manmade products on your body, but do keep in mind the amount of manmade particles and shit that will end up in your dreads. smoke, dirt, dust and polution can all find their way in and are very hard to get out, even with soap.
anyway, try leaving your hair alone for a few months and see if any nice mats form. good luck :)

Well, I'm actually traveling around a lot couchsurfing right now; so I can't really be carrying around shampoos or being able to shower every day.

if you just keep a bar soap shampoo in like a plastic bag, their not really a hinderance to carry around. providing you have a backpack or something
