I see the "fuel lobby" as little better than the Countryside Alliance. They are a bunch of rightwing dullards who demand their inalienable right to destroy the planet in the quickest way possible. Try to think a little further than your own wallet when choosing what causes you support...

Petrol os ridiculosly exspensive in the UK, more than in the US and the rest of Europe and the people in the UK don't like it, so there are going to be protests (again). So people are buying it up in anticipation of not being able to get any.

    Is that what you meant?

Basically everyone thinks that the protesters are gonna do blockades so the fuel tankers can't come out and give the stations their petrol!!
SO some severe panic buying is going on.. and the stations are running out mearly from that!!
Even though it has been stated the petrol is still gonna be delivered.. people just are not listening!!
There for I am not worried.. my petrol is in the red.. I'll get some tomorrow

Like it or not some of us rely on petrol for work... or getting to uni.... not ideal but there ya go..its a fact.. its also a fact that Fuel tax is a major source of income for the government... and i'm entitled to support any cause i wish... from local isssues to national ones... my choice... and the state of my wallet happens to be very important to me....... with respect...

Indeed you are, I was just imploring people to put a little thought into the issues involved before they decide to support reactionary agendas... you don't have to though, that's entirely your prerogative:)

Well here's my take on it after todays events in Lincolnshire, where every station in the town and surrounding area is now out of petrol...

I had no idea what was going on today as I passed the queues of people at the first station. By the second station I realsied that the major roads were gridlocked and presumed that there must be fuel protests planned again II haven't seen the news for a week, sorry).

Went about my daily business and planned to book the car in for a coolant change before winter. Petrol gauge on 1/4 tank, enough for 5 days work, or the whole month if I use the bus or cycle.

Got caught in the gridlock, baking heat and guess what? The car overheated and the radiator went. Pulled into local garage and left it with them until Wednesday.

Am I complaining? No. I have no choice but to be without my vehicle but I'm not bothered.

Did I panic at the "impending crisis"? No, I thought how stupid it was that people have been queueing from 5am for fuel (some for over 3 hours!), and it was BECAUSE OF THEM that there is now now fuel left in the town.

Was I surprised when I found that my Dad had filled up and bought a jerry can? Nope.

Am I surprised that this country falls apart because of a headline and media hype? Nope.

Am I quietly laughing at everyone and finding the fact that people really don't know what they will do without a car? You bet!

But what concerns me more is that most people don't see the further reaching implications. That oil is actually running out. That we will one day have to make do without or vehicles (or very limited use of them). That not being able to drop the kids off at school will be irrelevant when the lorries can't get to the supermarket, that the power stations are rationing gas and fuel oil and blackouts are a common occurance.

I was only talking to a friend the other day about our reliance on "3 or 4 companies", meaning power, supermarkets, water and petroleum, and made lots of examples about what would happen if one or more of them failed/ran out etc. It is scary how many people a)didn't think that it would happen b)didn't think that it could happen and c) the most worrying - that the government wouldn't LET it happen!

In a sadistic and curious kind of way I'm really interested to see how events unfold and how people cope. It's kind of funny, kind of sad, but it isn't boring. And it makes you realise just how shallow most of the population really is. God forbid they may have to walk somewhere, that would make them late for Coronation Street!

Happy queuing. Now where's my cycling shorts )

I think a recent poll found that 8 out of ten drivers couldn't imagine what they would do without a car. To me that's a singular lack of imagination. The other night I walked four miles to get home, taking just less than an hour. A few decades ago people would have thought nothing of walking a few miles to get somewhere, but now it is unthinkable for many to do this kind of thing. The vast majority of car journeys are utterly unnecessary. Particularly within urban areas where viable mass transit links already exist. Have a little moral fibre, people...
