Many growers keep several donor ("mother") plants and take clones off of them. That involves taking a small cutting from a plant and rooting it. It becomes a seperate plant (though still part of the donor).
The advantages of growing from clones:
-You know what sex the clones are. No more wasted time/space/$$$ on males.
-You know how good the smoke will be.
-You don't have to wait 4--6 weeks for the plants to reach sexual maturity before flowering. You can flower a clone whenever you want, even if it just rooted.
-It's a way to preserve a favorite strain.
