    Tires are very important.

They were just saying on the local news that SUV's are causing the majority of the accidents today because drivers with no skills or knowledge think the 4WD button on the dash is magic, and will make all the problems go away. My husband's Jeep has several different kinds of four wheel drive available. He knows what they all are, and what each one is best used for. I have no clue. But I don't think any of them are magic. Like any other tool, you have to learn how to use it. He says snow isn't as tricky as deep mud or loose beach sand. He used to practice a lot.

None of that matters tonight. It's a good weekend to enjoy all my favorite indoor stuff.

You know it's car salesmen that tell buyers they can go anywhere at any speed because of the magic of 4 wheel drive.

4x4 has more traction which translates into more confidence........but has the same brakes as when its in 2 wheel drive..

thats what causes most of their accidents

The salesman makes money, then the tow truck drivers at the North Carolina Outer Banks make more money when people push the button and try to drive onto the beach. The standard "consumer grade" 4WD's make it about 50 feet, which is lucky because the tow trucks have long enough cables and chains to reach them from the end of the pavement. Out on the Outer Banks, Jeeps dominate, while everything else but the Toyota Tacoma and 4Runner seems to struggle. Locals tell me the LandRover products do well also, but are not seen out there much because of the cost. Whatever you drive there, you need larger than average tires, let down to about 20 pounds.

If you want to know how much you can trust Ford to think through things and figure out what you need, you need to look no further than the famous episode of the Sopranos on HBO where AJ borrows his dad's Excursion for a date, pulls off the road to make out with his girl, and the catalytic converter sets the grass on fire. They have to scramble out of there half dressed, as the whole thing completely goes up in flames. I don't think it's legit to call something an off road vehicle if it can't even handle ordinary grass that is perfectly flat and dry.

My husband tells me only the Jeeps and LandRovers come from the factory with provisions made for keeping tall grass away from everything that is hot enough to start a fire.

I also asked him about what I like to call one wheel drive, for lack of a better term. I asked him if it's my imagination, or if it's a real thing. I've owned one Honda car and one VW that were extremely helpless on any kind of a moderately slick surface. Both were front wheel drive, and both were quick to spin one wheel and not use the other one at all, leaving you unable to move in a lot of situations. He says it's intentional, done to improve gas mileage. He says the quicker a front wheel drive system is to completely switch all the power to whichever wheel is turning faster, the less energy gets wasted by the wheels working against each other on dry pavement. Whatever the reason is, I hate it. They need to give you a way to turn that "feature" off, so you can at least have true two wheel drive in the snow.

I don't think my current car has ever been driven in the snow. I don't have to do it, and I prefer not to.

Probably the only reason his dad didn't kill him. Tony wouldn't be seen in that ugly thing, whatever it is. Can't identify it from that view.

The first flurries are starting to come down and the wind is starting to whip. I just don't want a power outage, although here on the coast the temperatures are usually a bit warmer, causing the snow to be denser and wetter, and outages are usually a given.

Been busy with appointments and sick kids. Mia had a relapse and has been flat out for a week now. Today she seems a little better and the new antibiotics have probably kicked in.

Now I shall work on the laundry, as like Lynn I still do theirs. :)
