for people completely ignorant of all things british where someone can post a question about phrases and words y'all use. like, what the fuck is a toff?

 

and can someone explain for me one more time what is meant by "taking the piss" or "pisstaking?" all i know is it sounds like someone is drainin' the lizard or seein' a guy about a dog.

Toffs, I'm surrounded by bloody toffs at Cambridge. Private school ponces. Some of them are quite nice though, having said that.

You could ask Giant, but I've lost faith in him since he failed to account for the wobble effect in planetary orbits and told me Jews fired laser beams from their eyes....

 

Toff is someone from the upper class, not necessarily snobby nor a ponce (careful with that one).

"Taking the piss" is makeing fun of someone, "pisstaking" is the act of.

It's not really an insulting word, but the way you take it depends on your attitudes to class I suppose. It could be taken as a compliment if he just meant you had a posh accent or refined tastes. Say it to a communist, they'd probably kill you.

I always used to wonder about why this stereotype was still around after all these years. Then I started work in Exel. You could count the number of people with great teeth on one hand, probably without using your thumb.
