I was reading the first chapter of my chemistry book today about atoms. And it said that if the nucleus (the protons and neutron) of an atom was the size of a pea, then the diameter of the path the electrons take around it would be the equivalent size of a domed baseball/football stadium. So does that mean nothing is really solid?!? I sunddenly feel woozy and unstable
uhmmm no.... because they are tiny in reality...... and the forces are strong enough to keep them together... a solid objects atoms are more packed in than a liquid and gas but the tiny scale its on means we see solids as totally dense
"So does that mean nothing is really solid?!?" depends how you think about it, the energy itself is solid enough to stop things falling through it... but then you have to visualize energy as solid so its a yes, no, maybe depends on you look at it kinda question.
The energy flowing between the electrons and nucleus takes up a vast majority of the volume of the actual atom. So it is in a way empty... unless you start to consider yourself as just a complicated electrical current.

Yep, even the densest elements are 99.999999% empty space. In fact at a smaller level, even neutrons, which are the densest items in the universe, are mostly empty. *Neutrons have a density equal to that of a Neutron Star*

Yup, mostly empty space. What really hurts you when you fall out of a tree is the interaction between the forces (the strong force, weak force, electromagnetism and gravity) which govern the relationships between the particles. What is also really mindblowing is the idea that, ultimately, all of the particles are made of the same stuff. In fact, they all may actually BE the same stuff in the same way that all of the cells in your body are made of you. All I can say is thank God for the strong force, weak force, electromagnetism and gravity, otherwise we would all just evaporate into a fine mist of subatomic particles, which would probably be, at least for a few billionths of a second, really freakin' uncomfortable.
another thing I read to help visualize.... "Modern measurements show that an atom has a diameter of roughly 10 to the -10th power, Meters and that a nucleus has a diameter of about 10 to the -15th power , meters."
It's all about scale. I wonder if the distance between atoms might roughly be equivalent to the distance between the various bodies in space?
dont they keep finding smaller and smaller particles inside of each other? it's like one of those russian nesting dolls, but it keeps going on forever. we could have universes living inside of us and not even realize it.
